George Sealy Detar of Galveston Texas died on a train while en route to New York. A dispatch from Rolla Missouri reported his death, with suspected heart failure. Waverly Smith and others accompanied him.
Washington reports the resignation of Postmaster General Charles Emory Smith and the appointment of Henry Payne of Wisconsin to fill the vacancy. President Roosevelt is expected to announce further cabinet changes soon as part of a broader political realignment.
Lake Charles Louisiana December 17 Actual work started on the Sabine canal project to irrigate 100000 acres in the Vinton area. The 30 mile main canal will be 200 feet wide with two 100 foot wide laterals. Capital stock at 200000 is fully subscribed. The canal will reach Hackberry Gum Cove and Sabine prairie and be built largely by North Louisiana stockholders with no local land interests. Oil steamer Paraguay disabled en route to Port Arthur delaying shipments and car shortages limit traffic. several ships expected to load by month end.
