Lavaca County Cotton Referendum Set for Dec 18 Vote

Lavaca County growers will vote December 18 1955 on marketing quotas for the 1956 cotton crop. Chairman Herman H Hanslik notes quotas require two thirds approval to take effect with penalties for excess cotton and full parity price supports for compliant growers. Voting places include Moulton Moravia Sweet Home Hallettsville Vietin Shiner Vienna and Ezzell.

Two Dances Scheduled For Holiday Week

Two holiday dances planned at the VFW Hall raise festive spirits. The annual Christmas dance will be held on Monday with music by Ray Krenek for New Year’s Eve, December 31, offering a social gathering for friends at the VFW Hall.

The Moulton Fire Department held its meeting on Monday at the fire station. Officers elected include W. H. Santa Claus will make an official downtown appearance Monday December 19 at 7 pm in front of the Post Office. U S Farm Exports Rise 20 Percent in First Quarter

United States farm exports for the July August September quarter of the current fiscal year rose 20 percent from the previous year to 720 million dollars, with cotton exports at 40 million, down to 35 percent of the prior year. August exports reached 222 million, up 17 percent.

Man kills doctors in Brisbane office bombing

A man entered a Brisbane medical office, shot two doctors dead, and detonated a suitcase bomb. A third doctor and a bystander were severely injured in the blast.

An Airman Apprentice recently completed schooling at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Norman Oklahoma with high grades and is transferred to Olathe Kansas to attend an Air Controlmen School. He will work in control towers at airfields with training in electronics and radar.

Legion Auxiliaries Meet Plans and Holiday Outreach

The Geier Merrem Unit 382 of the American Legion Auxiliary held its regular meeting on Tuesday December 6. Volunteers plan a December 14 trip to San Antonio for the gift shop and a Brooks General Hospital visit this year with contact by December 13. The group will send Christmas cards to ill veterans and Santa distributed gifts to children and members after the business portion.

Negro Leader Found Burned and Beaten to Death

Herbert Johnson 60 president of Schulenburg NAACP chapter and commander of Schulenburg Negro American Legion Post was found dead on his farm ten miles west of Schulenburg. His car was burned and blood stains with a bloody stick were found near the corn crib. Investigators from Gonzales and Schulenburg Fayette counties pursued the case as no motive or racial trouble had been reported. Johnson's wife Naomi 57 found the body and two uncles helped search.

Lavaca Farmers Win Slight Acreage Increase in 1956

Lavaca County’s 1956 allotment rises to 40 631 acres despite a 4 percent national cut. The increase, 4 175 acres over 1955, comes after a Texas ASC committee pushed for relief for small farmers amid low prices. 18 Year Olds Must Register Under Federal Law

Federal law requires men to register on their 18th birthday or within five days after. In Texas, under current rules, no one under 21 is drafted except volunteers or delinquents. A man who fails to register faces fines up to $10,000 and imprisonment up to five years.
