Calumet Farm Profits From Eight Month Grazing Program
Calumet Farm in Lexington Kentucky runs 200 head of hereford steers on 1200 acres of blue grass pastures. The cattle, shipped from Texas last April, are long yearlings grazed through November and gain about forty pounds monthly. Manager J P Erbelhardt says the eight month program yields similar net profit to a 12 month feeding plan and favors herefords for their docile temperament and ease of movement.

Farmers Boost Fertilizer Share Of Income War Impact
Farmers spend a larger portion of income on fertilizer after the war, though current use may be only about half of what is economically optimal. A standard targets 100 to 200 pounds per tillable acre annually, meaning a 160 acre farm at 150 pounds needs about 12 tons yearly. Economical farming argues crop expenses should rise to raise yields rather than cut costs.
