The editor notes Texas will yield about 3,500,000 bales of cotton, the largest in eleven years, and Texas accounts for more than one fifth of the nation's crop. It also reports large grain outputs nationwide and encourages civic involvement through the Moulton Chamber of Commerce.
The proposal to place the national guard under federal control faces strong opposition in the South. Critics view it as another erosion of states rights by the federal government. The guard has operated under the Constitution for 175 years with no clear justification for change.
Indications point to a light vote in the democratic run off primary August 28. Coke Stevenson and Lyndon Johnson, senatorial run off candidates, are actively campaigning but struggle to spark enthusiasm. There is talk that Republicans may nominate W Lee O Daniel to oppose the Democratic runoff winner in November.
The Moulton City Council the Fire Department and the Chamber of Commerce back the state fire insurance association plan for a permanent community fire prevention committee. Each group will appoint two members to educate residents about fire hazards and reduce losses.
Mrs. Anna Jahn wife of Frank Jahn of Moulton died August 14 after a long illness at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom V Tousek in Moulton. Funeral services were held August 16 at St Josephs Catholic Church with interment in the Moulton Catholic Cemetery. She leaves a husband two sons a daughter a brother six sisters and four grandchildren. One son Lt Frank T Jahn was killed in action over Tokyo in 1945 and another son Victor Novak died in 1936. Smutith Funeral Home handled arrangements. Funeral hour closed local business houses. Born July 30 1890 in Nov Ohrad Lavaca county.
Rudolph Otro Fehrenkamp and Emil Archie Krejci, both from Moulton, enlisted in the Navy on August 10, 1948, at Houston. They head to recruit training in San Diego after discharge to Houston for schooling in disbursing and Yeomen programs respectively.
The Moulton Chamber of Commerce directed a regular monthly meeting at the City Office Friday night August 13 with Dr. M. M. Wagner presiding and W. H. Pundt as secretary. Members present included Joe Vanhamb Elo C Fehrenkamp August Etlinger Roy Kotzebue A J Darilek and O F Knape. Road construction and civic affairs were discussed.
Ed Novosad, a shoe repairer, has fully recovered from a fractured collar bone and is back at his workbench after a period away due to the injury.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Dibble returned from Houston after a week visiting relatives and friends. Dibble attended the Thurmond Wright rally at the coliseum Tuesday night and enjoyed a personal chat with both candidates.
The Moulton Fire Department hosts a dance at Herman Park Hall on Sunday September 5. Music by the Ad Mig orchestra. The public is cordial invited to join the firefighters for an evening of entertainment.
Mr and Mrs W L Young announce the arrival of a 7 pound 12 ounce daughter named Sandra Lynn last Saturday at the Renger Hospital in Hallettsville. The family now has a boy and a girl.
All rural school teachers are asked to visit the county superintendent’s office before September 1 to obtain the textbooks for their schools, establish salary schedules, and complete other arrangements for the 1948 49 school term.
W. Kubenka of Komensky has recovered well after a surgical operation at Shiner Hospital and returned home on Monday afternoon.
Mrs Ad Petrek underwent an appendectomy at Shiner Hospital Monday morning and is recovering nicely.
The family thanks all who assisted during their bereavement for Mrs. Joe Heger. Gratitude to the choir Smith Funeral Home and Reverends Matocha Kopp and Hoffman for consoling words. Thanks also to neighbors and friends for food brought to their home.
The Moulton Chamber of Commerce met at the high school gym Monday night. Jeanette Jaluka agreed to represent Moulton as duchess at the Hallettsville fiesta next month. The group discussed road signs, bridge approaches, dues, and connections to the Gonzales farm to market road.
Mrs. Paula M. Arnim 738 widow of E A Arnim died at her Flatonia home on August 14. Funeral services were held August 15 at 10:30 a.m. with interment in Flatonia City Cemetery. A lifelong Flatonia resident she supported local schools and funded Texas students through high school and university. She is survived by two sons E A Arnim Jr and James D Arnim, both of Flatonia.
Mr and Mrs Jimmie Selzer welcomed an 8 pound 8 ounce son born Friday at 6 45 AM at Dr Hugo J Strieder Hospital Maternal grandmother Mrs Lenora Hanko noted in the birth record titled Jimmie Jr
Haas and family visited Mr. and Mrs. Herman Attenweiler in Chicago. Daniel stayed longer for a visit. They attended Milwaukee's centennial celebration and the Chicago Railroad Fair. Weather reported pleasant with highs near 79 and lows around 53.
Mrs. Mary Heger nee Rabel widow of Joe Heger died in San Antonio on August 14 at 10 40 A M. Funeral services were held at St Joseph s Catholic Church Moulton with burial in Moulton Catholic Cemetery. She was born in Austria December 2 1876 and came to Texas at age nine. She is survived by six daughters five sons twenty grandchildren and multiple siblings.
A 7 pound 3 ounce son named Irwen Alois Dornak was born Friday August 13 at 6 45 PM at Dr Hugo J Strieder Hospital to Mr and Mrs Louis Dornak of Flatonia and the former Miss Lillie Migl is the mother.
A 9 pound 9 ounce boy named Timothy Joseph was born to Mr. and Mrs Louis Faltisek at Dr Hugo J Strieder Hospital on Saturday August 14 at 7 45 AM The mother is the former Miss Stella Stasny.
A son Lloyd Vincent Burton was born to Mr and Mrs Robert L Burton Jr at Dr Hugo J Strieder Hospital Wednesday August 11 at 6 30 AM The mother Marian Farkus formerly Miss Marian Farkus of La Grange Tennessee is the father Robert L Burton Jr The family home is in Chattanooga Tennessee
Babe Ruth, baseball’s legendary star, died at a New York hospital Monday night at age 53. In 22 major league seasons, he hit 708 home runs. In local action, the Moulton Red Sox lost to the Clerkettes 5 to 3 as the Clerkettes built 2 runs in the third and 3 in the sixth. The Clerkettes had previously beaten Yoakum 16 to 4 in the Guadalupe Women’s League playoff opener. Hallettsville All Stars blanked Moulton All Stars 4 to 0 in the softball tournament while VFW edged Sodality 2 to 1 in another Tuesday game.
V. F. W. scored one run in the third and fifth innings, while the Sodality added its lone run in the fourth.
V. F. W. holds first as the Sodality Cattlemen and Komensky tie for second. Sodality meets Cattlemen Tuesday with Komensky to face the winner Thursday to decide the runner up. A two out of three trophy series against the second place club will be presented by the Lions Club.
The Brooke General Hospital team from San Antonio challenges the local V F W team at Lions Club Field this Saturday night August 21 seeking revenge after a 4 to 3 loss in a prior clash. The public is invited to attend and support the V F W.
