Corpus Christi plans elaborate preparations for the 30th annual American Legion state convention to be held over three days starting September 12. An attendance of 6,000 is expected as the city hosts the event. General Eisenhower conveyed he does not intend to run for president, a difficult but achieved statement. London hosts the 1948 Olympic Games with 5,000 athletes from 59 nations and 80,000 spectators at the opening ceremony as Uncle Sam’s athletes prepare to compete and win awards.

Texas to Choose Senator in Democratic Run-Off August 28

Texas voters will elect a successor to United States Senator W. Lee O Daniel in the Democratic run-off primary on August 28. The run-off features former Governor Coke Stevenson and Congressman Lyndon Johnson. Stevenson led Johnson by about 60 000 votes in the first primary. O Daniel is not seeking re election.

Fort Worth August 3 A petition seeks a Texas referendum at the August 28 primary on whether the state should vote Truman Barkley or Thurmond Wright in the presidential race. War Veteran Horace Grasse Buried With Military Honors

Horace Grasse, World War II veteran, dies at Brooke General Hospital in San Antonio. Service held at Old Moulton Baptist Church with burial in Moulton City Cemetery. Pallbearers and honor guards from Geier Merrem American Legion and VFW Post 6971 carried out graveside rites. Grasse is survived by four sisters and four brothers. He was married to Alice Rozmovsky on December 24, 1947.

Hartmann Burial Held in Shiner for William Hartmann

William Hartmann died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mueller in Shiner on August 1 at age 50. Funeral services were held August 2 at United Lutheran Church with Rev. Edwin Oelke officiating. Interment followed in Shiner City Cemetery. Six nephews served as casket attendants. Survived by three brothers and three sisters, plus other relatives.
