From Ulysses Grant to General Grant at West Point
A May 1839 West Point entry reveals the early oddities of Ulysses S. Grant. He slips in under the name Ulysses Simpson Grant after a naming mix up and later earns the nickname Sam. His cadet years show reluctance to military life, slow advancement, and initial misfits, yet foreshadow a future Civil War commander and president.
