The episode shows how wealth and birth influence social regard in 19th century schooling. Also notes Swiss cantons merging Catholic schools, Missouri emancipation debate, a dog’s loyal grief, a mouse hunt, and political editorials amid party tensions.
A forceful denunciation declares money drives the drug trade that despoils families and faith, vows ruin to those who profit, and invites others to join at a bag for “the certain means” of doom. It also describes Norse shoes with removable parts and screws, praising prudence and virtue.
A Rockport newspaper reports a strange three year old incident on a lake shore where a dream led two girls to a dead body with a bell and a large money stash. They buried the body and money, agreed not to disturb it for three weeks, then the money vanished after the man demanded his share.

In Washington on February 14 the Senate passed a bill for a wagon road from Kansas through South Pass and Salt Lake to California. The bill granting lands to Minnesota also cleared. The House sent a communication to the Senate urging ten thousand dollars for nitre discovery and manufacture. Private bills were reviewed before the Tariff bill committee of the whole adjourned.
