A reader describes a seven year hybrid corn, Reid's Yellow Dent male and Alexander's Gold Standard female, named Variety-Palin's Corn Flake Yellow. Dimensions note ear length 10 1 8 inches, circumference 3 4, 20 kernel rows, kernel length 8 4, width 1 6, weight 20 ounces, 92 percent corn 8 percent cob. Grower Fred OC Palin, calls himself just a countryman.
Daevon Palin, a leading corn judge and Indiana farmer, discusses how the champion ear of corn came to be. He recalls November 1910 harvest conditions and careful seed selection as key factors behind the superior ear.
A farmer recalls a corn show on the farm where ears judged for type are gathered in a seed box. The most perfect ears are exhibited and occasionally a champion ear is chosen during dinner at the house, placed on the windowsill to be stored in the seed house.
