Tom McFabrick found frozen in his cabin on December 22. Circle City reports Joe Moranzie shot and a saloon robbery by two masked men. Moranzie may die.
A noon fire in Toronto Ont destroyed the Gowans Kent & Co building at Front Street, the crockery and glassware dealers. Loss estimated at 200000 dollars, with 20000 dollars on the owner’s building.
In Shippensburg Pennsylvania on February 11 Dr Robert C Stewart was found dead in a room reportedly asphyxiated by illuminating gas. Two dogs in the room were also found dead. Local authorities are investigating the case as a possible gas related incident.
Manila February 10. The American forces at 3 40 p m attacked Caloocan and seized the town after a combined bombardment and ground assault. The Monadnock and Utah battery opened fire, the Kansas and Montana regiments led the advance, and the Presidencia was taken by 5 30 p m amid heavy fighting. American casualties were light.
Washington notes from Manila indicate Gen Otis has not sent news of new conflicts by office hours. He mentions buying native ponies for transport, as larger American horses fail in the climate. Secretary Alger expects no terms with Aguinaldo while insurgents remain armed. Absence of Iloilo news also reported.
Washington officials see a shift in Samoa’s dispute as Britain and the United States weigh recognizing Mataafa as king. Mataafa’s claim contrasts with Malietoa Tanum, once backed by Chief Justice Chambers. German support favors Mataafa. Further information is awaited before any recognition decision.
The battleship Texas under Captain Sigsbee was ordered from Havana to Galveston Texas and sailed Thursday. She will return to Havana the day after the Maine victims’ graves are decorated.
