The dialogue probes how such simple beginnings fuel rumors, matchmaking, and questions about character as Susie Macy muses on Amelia’s possible interest in Mr Vere.
Amelia Macy and her parents meet Edward Bolton Revere, a wounded Confederate sergeant, recently released from Belle Isle. Revere confirms prisoner experience and upcoming cavalry duty at Harper's Ferry as the family recalls past risks and a shared resolve amid war. Susie Macy asks about Fanny and reflects on love, duty, and science discussed earlier by Mary.
In a clipped dialogue from a late era scene, Macy and Amelia observe Edward Revere a young locomotive builder who vows there is an inner gas of all gases. The dialogue explores electricity, steam power, and the subtle currents between men and women as Susie’s memory lingers. The passage ends with "[TO BE CONTINUED.]"
