Five masked robbers halted a late night Oregon Express near Shady Point two miles south of Roseburg. They blew open safes with dynamite, set the coach and mail cars aflame, and escaped with some mail and valuables. One express safe moved to Portland. baggage and several trunks destroyed. sheriff hunts the gang as the train reaches Portland after hours of delay.
Salt Lake City Jan 30 Bartholomew Race of Goshen Utah shot and killed his wife then killed himself after telling his wife he would do so. The newborn and eight children were saved by neighbors. In Indiana, a Big Four passenger train collided with a freight engine after an open switch at Easton injuring two and damaging both locomotives.
The Denison house in Indianapolis suffered about 25000 dollars in losses after a fire yesterday. The hotel has long served as the Republican state headquarters and was crowded with guests with a Republican legislature in session. Fire started from a defective quartz on the third floor.
Canton Ohio January 30 Gen Russell A Alger arrived by invitation for cabinet talks and is believed likely to be offered the secretaryship of war. A Canton report says he accepted the offer after discussions with President-elect McKinley. Columbus Ohio January 30 confirms the formal offer and Alger’s acceptance of the post.

Washington January 30 The War Department plans for West Point cadets to attend the March fourth inaugural ceremonies. With no appropriation yet for their subsistence, Ebbitt House manager H C Burch offers to house the cadets free during their Washington stay while transport arrangements remain the department’s responsibility.
A powder magazine at Crystal Ridge colliery near Hazleton exploded shortly before midnight. Night watchman Herman Rickert was injured. losses run to several thousand dollars. Palmer the farmer of Mamaroneck fatally wounded his mother Harriet Palmer and sister Gertrude after killing his brother Leonard Palmer, a Grammar School No. 9 teacher, on Monday evening January 18. Gertrude died at 1 a.m. January 30. Harriet died January 19, and doctors feared peritonitis might claim Gertrude earlier.

Albert Dunning, a Chicago coachman, shot and killed Mrs. Mary Denning at her home on State Street. He then tried to shoot her two sons, and fatally wounded himself. Police say jealousy. Denning says Denning’s wife feared Dunning and he had previously tried to kill.
