Washington January 28 Commissary General Charles P Eagan’s court martial verdict and findings have been sent to the receiving authorities for action. The three day proceeding lasted under eight hours of actual sitting with a secret to be kept until proper review. Spectators included several of Gen Eagans daughters friends and curiosity seekers.
Senor Quesada, a veteran Cuban junta diplomat in Washington, will depart for Havana on a special mission. He will join Gen. Gomez as soon as possible, operating under President Palma's instructions, with officials confident of beneficial results for Cuba and acceptable to the United States.
Washington on excellent authority reports the president will remove Gen Brooke as military governor of Cuba and appoint Gen Leonard Wood in his stead effective February 1. Gen Wilson is named for second in command. No reason given. Cubans reportedly welcome the change amid dissatisfaction with Brooke's stern methods.
The War Department revoked the January 7 order allowing the Spanish Bank of Havana to collect Cuba taxes for the year ending June 30. The funds were returned to Dr. Jover Antonio and accepted. General Brooke was instructed to establish a tax collection system with appropriate machinery as needed.
Los Angeles January 28. A power line system delivering electricity to the city from the head of the Santa Ana river, 80 miles away, is completed. This marks the world’s longest transmission network supplying LA.
The Record reports Chicago will supply Europe with 10 000 coach and pass horses. They will originate from various Illinois and Iowa counties and be shipped at a rate of 200 head per week.
A Seattle report from June 28 details Copper River miners perishing while crossing Valdez glacier. Among the dead are Charles Khron of New York City and C. P. The Chicago Young People's Christian Temperance Union seeks to clear the Woman's Temple debt and make it a Frances Willard memorial. They propose raising 800000 dollars by selling 8000 shares of 10 each, aiming for pledges before February 17 and full payment by 1899's end. Pledges go to Eva M. Shantz, with all funds paid only after total subscriptions are secured.
In Lincoln Nebraska on January 28 a Gos pel member proposed a committee to investigate irregularities in the house post office department. A letter to a woman other than his wife allegedly passed through the post office and back to the wife with the remark I have caught you. Names are not given but the incident threatens a divorce case and troubles for the postmaster. The postmaster and deputy deny knowledge of the matter.
Emil Reuter, a Brooklyn wholesale flour dealer, and his wife Ida died after attending a theater. Mrs. Reuter collapsed on a sidewalk and died en route to a neighbor's home. doctors arrived too late for her husband, who died soon after. The deaths were attributed to heart disease and apoplexy respectively.
Waco Texas January 28 farmers Ross Leary and Andrew Griswold from Hill County burned to death in the Commercial hotel Hillsboro as a fierce wind fed flames. Only Griswold’s charred trunk and bones and Leary’s remains were found. John McClure missing and feared dead. Earlier, in Joplin Missouri Thomas Talley family’s three children burned to death when their Cedar Creek home burned while they were at church.
A motion to quash the indictment against Mrs. Anna George for first degree murder in the Saxton case was filed claiming procedural defects in the grand jury. The judge overruled a plea in abatement and a further filing will occur.
Former U S attorney general Augustus H Garland died within ten minutes of a cerebral stroke while arguing Towson v Moore before the United States Supreme Court. Garland, a longtime senator and judiciary committee member, collapsed after uttering This, your honors, is our contention. He was surrounded by colleagues as physicians pronounced the fatal attack.
Augustus Hill Garland of Arkansas a noted lawyer politician and statesman with a long career in state and federal government is described. Born in Tennessee in 1832 he moved to Arkansas and built a legal career before serving as senator governor and cabinet member. He faced health decline culminating in a fatal grip illness and death after sustaining from the supreme court room.

Washington reports a shift from two weekly sails to five with the Plant line, effective after next Monday. The route speeds mail to Cuba with Havana as the hub, delivering to all points east of the Missouri within 60 hours from St. Louis Chicago New York and Boston, reducing Cuba’s distribution time and improving mail to other Cuban destinations.
In St Thomas on January 27 the U S armored cruiser Brooklyn failed to enter port after appearing off Charlotte Amalie. Health officials quarantined the ship for 14 days, prompting an apparent return to Cuba. The pilot is blamed for the unauthorized action though locals doubt it.
Asheville January 27 W H Penland cashier of the defunct First National Bank of Asheville indicted with W W Beez e president and J F Dickerson director for embezzlement has made a full confession Trial of the cashier set for February 15 The bank closed July 41 1897 and the government says the frauds were sensational Officials say the two other indicted may confess and no details of Penlands confession are being released.
Northbound Big Four train No 2 at about 40 mph struck an unknown man and woman walking on the rails a few miles west of Cleveland, Ohio. Both bodies were brought to the city morgue and the coroner will attempt to identify them.
In Steubenville Ohio on January 27 a 100 ton rock toppled from a hill and crashed into Daniel Burns home at the north end of town. The rock crushed a gondola car end on a siding and bent the track. Burns was buried and badly hurt, his wife hurled 50 feet away and seriously injured, and their son received injuries as the roof and debris moved him about 30 feet.
