Rural Free Delivery Routes Grow to Nearly 30 Thousand
Between June 30, 1904 and March 1, 1905 the post office department opened 5,432 rural free mail routes, bringing the total to 29,999. Illinois leads with 2,450 routes, followed by Ohio with 2,161 and Iowa with 2,048. The program costs about $7,000,000 annually, with each new route adding roughly $25. Rural Free Delivery is a relatively new service, begun as an experiment during the current administration.
