Injured 11 year old Joan Phelan sues in Grundy County

An eleven year old girl from Kinsman, Joan Phelan, testifies by wheelchair as her father sues for 2.2 million in Grundy County Circuit Court. The trial, presided by Circuit Judge Leonard Hoffman, includes a film shown to jurors and testimony from neurosurgeon Dr. Ronald Manfredi detailing Joan's condition.

Morris Planning Commission to discuss Hornsby store rezoning

The Morris Planning Commission will meet Tuesday at 7 30 p m in the First National Bank of Morris to discuss rezoning for Hornsby suggestive new store at Illinois 47 and George Street. A public hearing Aug 21 led to a delay pending planning consultant review and a contract zoning opinion from City Attorney James Peacock.

Segretti to plead guilty in 1972 Florida primary case

Donald H. Segretti agreed to plead guilty to an expanded four count indictment charging conspiracy and illegal publication of political statements in the 1972 Florida Democratic presidential primary. The case involves money from Herbert Kalmbach and alleged efforts to disrupt Democratic candidates Jackson and Muskie. The plea hearing is set for Oct. 1 in Washington D.C.

Sextuplets born to Denver couple at Colorado General

Six babies four boys and two girls were born six weeks premature to Mr. and Mrs. Eugene J. Stanek at Colorado General Hospital in Denver. The mother and infants are in fair condition with weights from under two to just under three pounds. Caesarean delivery was needed for the last five babies. The Stanek family also includes a four year old son.

Open bids on canal project in Grundy County

Charles O'Brien and Son Construction Company of Morris submitted the apparent low bid of 22 244 on a channel improvement project for the Illinois Michigan Canal in Grundy County Springfield. The Department of Transportation release says work includes constructing a new culvert beneath the canal at Brown's culvert one mile east of Seneca. Estimated cost by state engineers was 20 300.

Three men killed in Carbondale plane crash

Authorities identify three Lockport men as Robert Diemer 23 pilot Michael Parker 22 and Gary Beck 23 who died when a single engine Beech Musketeer stalled during final approach at Southern Illinois Airport near Carbondale. Witnesses say the engine struck the cabin after the impact.

Youth Injured in Seneca Football Game

Sixteen year old Jack Maier remained in fair condition at St. Joseph Hospital Joliet after injuries from a Sunday football game with friends in Seneca. He had three facial fractures including a broken cheekbone and was moved from Morris Hospital for surgery on Thursday.

Grundy County Corn Festival Parade Plans For 175 Units

The 25th annual Grundy County Corn Festival parade is expected to attract more than 30 000 people and feature up to 175 units. Parade chairman Tom Dzuryak says floats bands and new units will thrill attendees. The event runs Sunday from 2 p m with a 4 30 p m finish. horses will be allowed in the lineup and an Antique Gas Engine Show runs 11 a m to 5 p m.

IBM hit with 352 million verdict in antitrust case

IBM was found guilty in federal court of monopolistic practices and ordered to pay Telex Corp. 21.9 million in damages while Telex must return IBM documents and destroy infringing manuals. Judge Christensen also ordered IBM to divest pricing strategies and disclose design information for future products.

Rainy Start Across Illinois as Temps Dip to 50s

Overnight temperatures fell to the lower 50s statewide with dreary conditions. Light rain covered most areas while Quincy Moline and Rockford topped an inch. The National Weather Service expected light showers to linger eastward into the afternoon.

The Morris Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing at 7 30 p m Thursday at the First National Bank of Morris on setback variances for Early Realty of Joliet seeking a 24 by 30 foot building on a 56 by 120 foot lot after rezoning from R II to B I The plan would place the office four feet from a residential area while other requests call for 28 feet from Division Street and 20 feet from the north property line.

Special Council meeting to discuss utilities and rates

Acting Mayor Robert Gilbertson called a special City Council meeting for 7:30 p.m. in the Morris Public Works Building. Aldermen will consider garbage and dumping rates and emergency action on water wells repair. Proposals to extend water and sewer lines to the Bolen Industrial Subdivision will be reviewed.

Red Jenkins of Main St Maron reports to Grundy County Sheriff's Office at 3 45 p m Sunday that his son Scott Jenkins 12 owns a go cart stolen from the rear of the Jenkins residence. It is valued at 100 with four mag wheels worth 50.
