In Pontiac Michigan nine women were arrested as a heated school busing dispute began. Five chained themselves at a bus yard entrance to block buses for the federal integration program while four others pressed the stop effort. Police cut chains and moved demonstrators as buses began to pass.
Decatur Education Association rejects a one year contract offer and plans token picketing at all 39 district schools while three elementary schools may open with non striking staff. Strikes continue in Glenbrook Zion Benton Urbana with pending votes and walkouts.
A DC3 charter carrying Hill's Auto Service softball players from Port Huron to Kansas City landed in Kankakee after turbulence left two injured and hospitalized for head injuries. Six others were treated and released. Passengers included Clyde Hill and Bernadine Long, with pilot David Gann and co-pilot Leon Boyd.
Lisbon marked its annual homecoming with a Labor Day parade. Irving Hauge won $15 for best commercial float with four gas engines on a flatbed. Bud's Place ice cream shop earned $10 for second. Jim Horton won $5 for stock car racing. Additional prizes went to Earl O'Brien trucking, and organizational and antique car divisions recognized West Lisbon groups and car owners Newman Olson Jr. and Sr. plus other top finishers.
Anita Foss a 17 year old from Route 1 was treated and released at Morris Hospital after a bicycle collision with John Rheiner 28 of 419 West Washington Street. Foss exited the Dry Cleaners driveway on North Street and was struck as Rheiner traveled westbound. Foss was dragged 10 feet under the 1964 Oldsmobile before Rheiner could stop in rain.
Warm spell continues with highs near 90s and nightly lows in 60s. Fair tonight, then partly sunny Wednesday turning hot with isolated storms. Weekend rainfall totaled 1.56 inches as temperatures hovered in the upper 80s to 90s in Morris and at Dresden Island Locks and Dam.
Grundy County sheriff reports one weekend accident and a pistol theft case. An incident Friday at 1 40 p m involved a two car crash near S Ridge Road with injuries none. A Monday report cites a theft of a Smith & Wesson pistol from a Coal City area residence.
Two 18 year olds from Morris, Gary T. Baker and Kenneth L. White, faced court on charges of setting off fireworks in a mailbox after being arrested early today. Each posted a $25 cash bond and await a Sept. 22 court date. A separate case lists William W. Jones, 22, charged with driving without a license after a Friday arrest on I-55. He paid a $50 bond and received a speeding ticket for 82 in a 70 zone.
The Morris Community High School board will discuss wage and price freeze rules at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the administrative offices. Items include school opening reports, Lincoln birthday observance changes, an Office of Public Instruction audit of state aid and transportation claims, and contracts for Grundy County Area Vocational School custodians.
A festival melee near Watsonville California left one man dead and nine injured after hours of knife fights among motorcyclists and youths. State patrols and deputies contained about 5 000 attendees at Stratton State Park and 7 020 over three days at Gebhard Woods.
A Colorado man, Karl Johnson of Golden Cole, was admitted to Morris Hospital for observation after a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 55 six miles north of Illinois 47 in Grundy County. Johnson was a passenger in a semi driven by Donald Waldmann of Sterling, Colorado.
Charles O'Brien and Son Construction and James E McElwain Co Inc Morris jointly submitted the low bid of 1 314 693 to the Illinois Division of Highways to widen and resurface 4 40 miles of U S 6 between the Rock Island crossing east of Morris and the Grundy Will County line Bids opened Friday in Springfield Estimated cost 1 316 000 This marks the first bid on the U S 6 improvement east of Morris.
County Board of Review reduced property assessments for multiple owners including Thomas McLuckie Jr Maine Township and Agnes Hoge Morris in Nettle Creek while two parcels saw no changes. Some assessments were raised for Bryl Gonham Vienna and Omar Halpin Gardner with Halpin later receiving a net reduction on one property. Several names remained unchanged.
