Skylab 2 astronauts see both auroras in one day

Space Center Houston reports Skylab 2 crew Alan Bean Owen Garriott and Jack Lousma on their 41st day of a 59 day mission observed both the northern and southern lights in a single day a likely record. They noted ongoing solar activity and Bean urged continued crew expansion beyond Skylab 3.

Mostly sunny and cool today with a high in the upper 70s. Tonight will be fair and cool with a mid 50s low. Friday continues sunny and cool with highs in the upper 70s. Dresden Island Locks and Dam reported a Wednesday high of 83 and low 55. Morning readings showed 56 at 7 a.m. and 72 in downtown Morris at 10 45 a.m.

Lightning flashes blamed for Morris power outage

Sgt. Ron Fox reported three colored flashes in the sky before Morris lights failed at 11 30 p m on Wednesday. Patrolman Syd Reeve confirmed a power outage as five grass fires were seen along a fence near DuPont Road. A downed electrical line on Illinois 47 south of DuPont Road caused a 39 minute outage, likely from prior damage and wind gusts.

Morris Public Library Hosts Get A Quainted Open House

The Morris Public Library Board and staff invite teachers and parents to a 7 to 8 30 p m open house in the lower lobby Tuesday to meet the new Children's Librarian Miss Carol Wilken and learn about children's services and general library offerings. Adults new to the building can also discover available materials and programs and offer suggestions.

Boyle Charged With Murder In Yablonski Killings

Deposed United Mine Workers leader W A Boyle faced murder charges in the killings of Joseph Yablonski and his wife and daughter. A second warrant targets William Turnblazer, a District 19 official turned state's evidence, tied to a plot to murder and finance the crime.

Sirica denies rush in Watergate tapes case

Terrorists flee with hostages from Paris embassy

Five Palestinian gunmen who seized 13 hostages at the Saudi Embassy in Paris for 27 hours fled in a Syrian Arab Airlines plane from Le Bourget. The Iraqi ambassador turned himself in as a hostage to secure four women’s release. two Saudi men were freed earlier.

Morris teen injured inAshley Road crash

Diane M. Livsey, 17, of 131 Robinson Dr., treated and released at Morris Hospital after the car she rode in ran off Ashley Rd striking an embankment at 7 05 p m Wednesday. Robert H. Norris, 19, of 222 Susan Circle Dr. was driving north at about 50 mph when he hit holes, lost control, and crashed one mile south of US 6. His 1965 Plymouth went off the north shoulder, slid 60 feet, struck an embankment, then veered east 50 feet into mud. Livsey transported by Davis Ambulance. No tickets issued.

Evacuation After Major Water Main Break In Chicago

A large water main on Chicago's North Side fractured causing an eight block flood. Twenty seven families were evacuated and 53 people received Red Cross shelter and meals. Water rose rapidly, basements flooded, pavement washed away, and authorities sealed the area while emergency pumping operated.
