Morris Illinois council reviews water and sewer fund balances and future obligations. Mayor Aage Hansen warns of state orders for a secondary treatment plant and possible daily fines up to 200 dollars if dumps and facilities aren’t upgraded.
The Morris Planning Commission will review zoning change requests at a 7:30 p.m. public hearing today in City Hall. Meetings are open to the public.
Normaly Berg Construction of Rock Island bids $864,972.45 for sanitary sewers and Brown and Lambrecht of Joliet bids $90,000 for a pond facility as bids are opened by the village board. Five bids were received for the sewer project, with Knapp Construction of Rochester, Ind. as the second lowest at $1,290,000. The pond site covers 74 acres with several ponds over about 50 acres. The village also seeks $270,000 in general obligation bonds for sewer and water needs and will lease a 1967 Chevrolet Biscayne squad car for $115 monthly. City Clerk Bitner to attend a tax sale next week. September fines totaled $195.
Senator Paul Simon attended a Morris event supporting Martin Gleason for Illinois state senate. He urged ethics reform and lobbyist disclosure, noted a recent Illinois Supreme Court ruling on tape recordings, and highlighted education, industrial growth, and the Joliet area’s development near Dresden and Interstate 80.
Two acres of corn burned at the Alvin Burkhart farm in Goodfarm Township after winds toppled an electric fence. Mazon Volunteer Fire Department arrived shortly after 2 p.m. and battled the blaze for nearly an hour.
The Grundy County Board of Supervisors met with lively discussion over a proposed county nursing home and zoning matters. The Grundy County Planning Commission led by Daniel N. Beal recommended adopting a two year contract with Carl L. Gardner and Associates for planning work totaling 27900 with 9000 funded by Grundy County. District concerns were raised by Supervisor Burl Gotham who urged in person attendance by consultant Joseph Abel and the ordinance was sent to the plat committee for review. A report on mileage and fuel tax distribution to municipalities was read and promiscuous claims were ordered paid. A special committee reported on plans for a medical care complex and potential county nursing home, noting Morris Hospital trustees favor a feasibility survey funded by the hospital.
The U S Weather Bureau projects fair and cool conditions tonight with the low in the 30s. Wednesday brings increasing cloudiness and a high near 70 while Collins Weather Station logged 70/38 yesterday. At 9 am today Morris station read 46 and downtown Morris at 11 30 am recorded 61 degrees.
Morris volunteer firemen fought a blaze for three hours in 80 acres of weeds and timber behind Sklut's Junk Yard on Rod and Gun Club Road as 40 mph winds spread the flames. Fire crews built back fires and used about 4000 gallons of water before gaining control.
Hurricane Inez tracked toward Mexico after 18 days of uncertain forecasts. Forecasters credit a mix of weather satellite data and luck as the storm surprised by turning toward Cuba and then Florida, disrupting expected paths along the Caribbean and Gulf.
The United States and the Soviet Union aimed for early accord on a nonproliferation treaty but key questions remained unresolved. Gromyko signaled progress yet U.S. officials noted no treaty wording agreement and planned resumption of talks in New York with William C. Foster as likely U.S. negotiator.
Morris City Council approved a bid by Wendell Wilson of Wilson Chevrolet for a 1967 four door Biscayne at 2248 dollars. The single bid was accepted minutes before the 4 p.m. deadline and the new squad car should be ready in five to six weeks.
