Graduation exercises at Shabbona School Morris are scheduled for June 4 at 7 45 p m in the school gym. Interim superintendent Dr H L Richards will deliver the address. The seventh grade chorus directed by Charles Hammond will provide music and Kathy Larson will play.
Juan V. Corona, a 37 year old farm labor recruiter, is charged with 10 counts of murder after 12 men were found buried in Northern California peach orchards. A search continues for additional victims as investigators probe the machete killings and crowd-sourced evidence across Yuba City and nearby ranches.
Mazon Township High School will hold commencement exercises at 8 p.m. June 4 in the high school auditorium for 48 graduates. Jane McGuan will deliver the farewell, with Victoria Brockman Carol Baker Deann Kilmer Luann Hampton Margaret Phelan Kathleen Glenn and Mary McShane recognized for scholastic achievement and Baker Brockman Hampton McGuan as National Honor Society members. The program features Pomp and Circumstance, an invocation by Rev. Donald Benzing, and guest Edward McFaul of Chicago. Baccalaureate services are listed for 8 p.m. Sunday with Karen Gilmoure at the piano and Rev. Paul W. Mallory delivering the message.
Partly sunny and not quite so cool today with a high in the low 60s. Fair and cool tonight around 40. Mostly sunny and warmer Friday with a high in the low 70s. Dresden Island Locks and Dam observed 57 degrees high and 35 low on Wednesday. At 7 am today the temperature was 42 degrees.
A coroner jury near Gardner recommended posting a safe speed limit on the 2 mile west Kinsman Gardner blacktop road near Illinois 47 after Mrs. Earl Davies 58 died from injuries in a May 4 collision with a car driven by David Baudino 17. Baudino was cited for driving in the wrong lane and fined $15. The jury noted the road is 17 feet wide with loose gravel and urged speed signage.
A South Holland man told Grundy County deputies at 8 p.m. Tuesday that items valued around 1500 were stolen from the trunk of his parked car at the Coffee House Restaurant. Stolen goods included radio 75, camera 154.50, typewriter 120, binoculars 60, bait casting rod 87, luggage 190, steam iron 25, electric razor 50, briefcase 35, golf clubs 180, and clothing 749.
The Joliet YMCA buys 60 acres five miles west of the Seneca turn off on U.S. 6 in LaSalle County to expand day camp grounds serving Joliet and Morris youths. Initial use includes family camping and Indian guide programs with plans for a lodge pool and recreation area within three years.
John Anderson 27 faced charges of resisting and obstructing a peace officer after a May 14 shooting at The Styx tavern in Coal City. Officer Charles Ingram reported drawing his weapon when Anderson fired injuring Dennis J. Travis and himself. Bond set at $1000.
The Illinois Supreme Court will review a state constitutional amendment exempting individuals from personal property taxes amid conflicting circuit court rulings. Judge Donovan ruled the amendment constitutional and dismissed a suit claiming businesses should be taxed. Judge Dahl had earlier held the tax unconstitutional for taxing corporations but not individuals.
Gary Olson 23 of Dwight in good condition at St Joseph Hospital Joliet after transfer for bone specialist. His wife Bonnie 20 fair at Morris Hospital after May 9 accident one half mile north of Hume School on Illinois 47. The four car collision killed Billy Everett 31 of Morris Route 1. Middle Age: the period in life when children leave you one by one, only to return two by two.
Officials await delivery of a specially designed fire truck from W S Darley Co to combat hydrocarbon fires at Northern Petrochemical. The 1000 gpm foam-equipped unit will support a 5 well water system and a plant fire brigade of 18 per shift with training starting in June.
