Firebombings and Shootings Ripple Through Champaign Urbana
A wave of firebombings and shootings struck Champaign and Urbana on Monday night injuring two people and prompting a major police and state security response. Firefighters battled seven or eight fires in Champaign and two in Urbana plus six at the University of Illinois. A Champaign frame house burned after shots were fired at firefighters. Police officers were targeted in Burch Village with one squad car hit by three bullets. University housing saw arson fires put out early with a girls dorm evacuated after a false alarm. A car on campus was destroyed by a firebomb. Officials linked the incidents to the death of a local man in custody, with authorities noting no evidence of police brutality from the autopsy.

Matthews Case Probe Is Closed
Illinois District 5 State Police at Joliet closed the inquiry into statements by Lorenzo Matthews of Chicago 41 alleging life threats before his death at Morris Hospital on April 12. Matthews, a self employed window washer, was arrested on U S 66 near Dwight after flashing his lights at Trooper Moyer and later died from injuries after a crash at the Morris Automotive Store on West Main Street. Bail was set at 100 dollars and Matthews reportedly spoke of threats from a syndicate during the arrest and investigation.
