Chicago teachers walk out after hours of talks with the Board of Education fail to resolve a contract dispute. About 600000 students stay home as 23 000 teachers face layoffs and a $54 million deficit, with talks to resume later in the day.
Evergreen Cemetery replaces the 80-year-old caretaker residence with a new modular one story home at the same site. Frank Wagner takes over as caretaker. Ray Hutchings retires after 38 years. The cemetery, about 80 acres, reports 7,919 total burials and 85 new graves last year.
In Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Herbert V. Walker sentenced Sirhan Bisagna Sirhan to die for the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel. The 25 year old Palestinian faced five additional assault counts and awaits appeals at San Quentin. The Kennedy family urged mercy while Sirhan showed no tears.
President Nixon selected Warren E Burger to become the 15th chief justice, a Midwest Republican and strict constructionist praised by conservatives. If confirmed he will replace Earl Warren, who retires at 78 after guiding the Warren Court through liberal expansion.
Friday at Morris Community High School students will elect senior junior and sophomore class officers. Candidates speak at 9 48 a m during an assembly, with results announced next Thursday at Honors Day.
The United Presbyterian Church ends its annual meeting with a report sympathizing with the aims of militant Negro and Mexican-American groups. The 840 clergy and elders approved the report at the assembly's final session. James Forman, leader of the National Black Economic Conference, spoke to the assembly last Thursday.
The report forecasts partly cloudy tonight with a mid 40s low, partial sun and warmer highs in the lower 60s Friday, and continued mild warmth Saturday. Collins Weather Station notes a Wednesday high of 61 and low of 42, with 9am 46 degrees and 10:30am 47 downtown Morris and precipitation of .20.
Mor ris Community High School hosts a baccalaureate service at 8 p m in the gym with Rev. Arthur Johns delivering Two Essentials for a High Quality of Life. Ministers David Zimmerman John Baxter Andrew Siedsma Harry Naden Roy Hamburger James Kinzig participate.
A public hearing is set for May 29 in Grundy County on a petition filed in early May to redraw land from the Lisbon Seward Fire Protection District to the Minooka Fire Protection District. Attorney Richard Wilder says residents seek better service from Minooka. Petitions list signatures from Wildey Montgomery Craemer Lorenz Lorenz Kettelson Dix Dix Wildey OBrien OBrien and OBrien of Minooka addresses.

A mistrial was declared Wednesday in the Ja Neen Welch case on a soliciting for prostitution charge. A new trial date was set for June 16. Welch, 48, Indiana antique dealer, involved in 1968 Wallace campaign, cited attorney conflict as reason for mistrial. Judge Dunne granted motion after Welch said she sought new counsel.
Springfield AP An influential Republican senator says a 2 percent state income tax could pass, but Gov. Ogilvie's 4 percent proposal is unlikely. Sen. Everett Peters heads a GOP task force that recommended deleting 135 million dollars in city aid from Ogilvie's plan, reducing the 4 percent package. He notes many cities do not need the aid and cites a pending sales tax boost as an alternate municipal funding source. The task force also urged cuts in several state agencies and departments. Ogilvie's measure faced a second Senate hearing as opponents prepare to testify.
Space Center Houston report details Apollo 10 crew Col. Thomas Stafford and Cmdr. Eugene Cernan entering the lunar module Snoopy for system checks in lunar orbit. They will descend to within 9.3 miles of the Sea of Tranquility in a rehearsal for Apollo 11 while Cmdr. John W. Young remains in the command ship. The maneuver aims to simulate the docking and return sequence before the May 1969 plan for a July landing.
U S government data show April consumer prices up six tenths of 1 percent pushing the index to 126.4. Over the last three months prices rose at an annual rate of 7.6 percent, the fastest since 1956, driven by gains in food housing and medical care with mortgage costs up 24 percent from a year ago.
Officials from state county and city plus top company executives will attend the invitation only dedication on June 6 at AMAX Aluminum's plant east of Morris. An open house for employees families and the local community will be held at a later date.
The Morris Community High School senior class of 189 plans a Friday trip in five buses at 8 30 a m returning near midnight. Ten sponsors chaperone. Army private Ronald L. Gray son of Elwood W. Gray of Wilmington was killed in Vietnam the Defense Department announced after his earlier miss status was updated this week. He was reported missing prior to the change.
