Israelis Down Egyptian MIGs and Push into Jordan

Israeli jets and ground forces shot down three Soviet MIG21s near the Suez Canal and an Israeli motorized unit rolled into central Jordan to hit a guerrilla base south of the Dead Sea. Cairo reported no Israeli losses. Amman noted Israeli and Jordanian casualties in separate exchanges. Defense Minister Dayan said Nasser’s position makes a major summer attack unlikely.

Fortas Ethics Ruling Finds Canon Violation by Fortas

Naperville residents approved a switch to a city manager by a 2487 to 1776 margin. The city of more than 16000 near Chicago currently operates with a mayor and four commissioners and must complete the changeover within 60 to 120 days.

Weather Outlook With Rain Tonight And Cooler Days Ahead

The weatherman forecasts rain tonight with lows in the mid 40s. Thursday will bring occasional showers and cool conditions with highs in the 40s. Friday looks to be shower likely and cool. At Collins Weather Station Tuesday high reached 72 and low 40, with 9 am 54 and 11 am downtown Morris 55. Temperatures Friday through Monday are expected 5 to 10 degrees below normal, with normal highs 70 to 76 and lows 50 to 55. Overall, cool conditions persist with a brief warming expected around Sunday.

Daley Tries to Halt Chicago Teacher Strike

Mayor Daley and city leaders seek to avert a public school teachers strike set to begin at 6 a.m. Thursday. River levels rise along Illinois at Morris

The Illinois River at Morris rose slightly over the past week. Weather observer Ray Webb of the St. Louis Weather Bureau reported May 14 the river was three feet above normal, and current levels are about one to one and a half feet above normal.

Minooka Votes to Extend Garbage Contract and Raise Fees

Minooka village approves a one year garbage collection contract with Banner Disposal Co and plans a June fee increase to 1.75 per month to cover billing and spring cleanup costs. A public relations committee is formed led by President Clyde Heap with several appointed trustees and citizens.

Emergency Planning Night to distribute booklets Morris

A free booklet In Time of Emergency will be handed to every Morris home next Monday night. Mrs James Gretencord leads the effort with volunteers from the Morris Junior Woman's Club to promote civil defense awareness and shelter planning for tornadoes floods and nuclear events. Fine imposed for theft of cigarettes by Blue Island man

Dale F E Smith age 20 of Blue Island was fined 500 dollars plus 40 dollars court costs after pleading guilty to theft of about 40 dollars worth of cigarettes February 26 from an A and P Supermarket in Morris. Smith appeared before Associate Circuit Judge Robert Malmquist at 11 a.m. today. Chaffin 20 of Blue Island originally pled not guilty. bond forfeiture was ordered and a hearing set for June 20.

Iranian IFYE student visits farm near Mazon in exchange program

Azad Sarhadian from Rezaiyeh Iran, 23, stays with the John Fillman family in rural Illinois as part of the International Farm Youth Exchange. The visitor, who speaks Persian and Turkish, will tour eight American farms over six months, learning local farming methods and noting the vast productivity of equipment compared with Iran.
