Mitchell and Stans plead innocent to Vesco case

Former Attorney General John N. Mitchell and former Commerce Secretary Maurice H. Stans pleaded innocent to charges of perjury conspiracy and obstruction of a federal investigation into financier Robert L. Vesco. Barry Sears also pleaded innocent while Vesco remained at large and a bench warrant was issued for him.

Variable showers forecast with 70s and 50s highs

Weather outlook calls for showers this afternoon with a high in the lower 70s. Tonight remains mostly cloudy with possible showers and thunderstorms and a low near 50. Tuesday adds showers and storms with a high again in the lower 70s. Weekend readings at Dresden Island Locks show 64 high and 43 low Saturday, 74 high and 47 low Sunday, with .57 inches precipitation. Morning 7 am at Morris 48 degrees and 11 am downtown Morris 76 degrees.

One-Car Crash injures Morris man and passenger

A 7:30 a.m. single vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near Illinois 47 left Steven D. Cook and Gary Eltrevoog injured. Cook, 19, was listed in guarded condition at Morris Hospital while Eltrevoog, 20, was in critical condition at St. Joseph Hospital Joliet. Cook’s demolished 1973 Plymouth was towed from the scene, state police cited him for improper lane usage.

Head on Collision Kills Two Chicago Drivers

Two cars collided head on on an expressway exit ramp northwest of the Loop in Chicago. The drivers Margaret Roseman 26 and Earl James 23 were killed. James passenger Minnie Bell 20 was thrown from the car and seriously injured.

Helen Schmid Named First Woman ICC Commissioner

Gov Daniel Walker announced the appointment of Mrs Helen Schmid 50 of Glen Ellyn to a five year term on the Illinois Commerce Commission ending in 1978. Mrs Schmid is married with three sons and is a Republican.

State police superintendent to speak at Liberty Under Law dinner

Dwight Pittman Illinois State Police superintendent and 18 year veteran will address the seventh annual Liberty Under Law dinner at 6 30 p m Saturday in the Eagles Hall Liberty and Washington Streets. Tickets are 2 50 each. The event honors a local enforcement official with officers from area agencies attending. Pittman was promoted through ranks from patrolman in 1955 to captain in 1966 and became director of training in 1969. He is a native of Virden and a former embalmer with six children including Dwight W Pittman at the Naval Academy.

Drowns on Mazon Creek while weekend fishing party

William E. Wilson 25, of Joliet, was found drowned Saturday afternoon along Mazon Creek near Pine Bluff Road. The Denning Mfg. Co. mechanic, a husband and father, died after a fishing trip with five men. An inquest will be held later after funeral services scheduled at Sonntag-Wylie Funeral Home.

Herscher Man Drowns in Kankakee River Boating Accident

Rudolph W. Splear Jr. 34 of Herscher drowns after his boat capsizes on the Kankakee River one fourth mile north of Illinois 113. His daughter Geannine Sue 11 and nieces Cindy and Debby Withert are rescued by Raymond J. Dalkonis. Splear’s body recovered by Wilmington Fire Department. He was born in 1939 in Kankakee and lived in Herscher all his life. He is survived by his wife, daughter, and eight year old son Rudy Laverne. Services set for Trinity Lutheran Church in Herscher at 1 30 p.m. Wednesday with burial in the church cemetery.

Boy, 12, Struck by Car on U.S. 6 near Vet Hospital

David Cepiel, 12, of 1345 Park Blvd., in guarded condition at Morris Hospital after head injuries from a Friday afternoon crash. He was eastbound on U.S. 6 near Dr Connor's Veterinary Hospital when a passing horn warning led him onto the shoulder. He ran back into traffic and was hit by an auto driven west by Donna M Conroy of 210 Liberty St.

Search Continues for Harry Green in River Crash

Rescue squads dragged the Kankakee River near the I 55 overpass looking for Harry Green believed to be in a beer truck that struck a concrete pillar and disintegrated near the bridge. Part of the cab has been recovered from the river.

Public hearing set on two zoning petitions in Grundy County

The Grundy County Board of Appeals will hold a 7:30 p.m. hearing at the Grundy County Courthouse on a 4.43 acre rezone east of Illinois 47 and south of DuPont Road in Wauponsee Township to B II for a car sales lot by Ronald Kaiser of Coal City. A second hearing covers 40 acres on U.S. 6 east of Morris to rezone from M II to M IV for mining pursued by Collins Properties Inc of St. Charles. Oral or written statements are invited.
