Driver drowns in pond near Interstate 80 crash

Davis A. Jarvis 31 of Aspen Colorado died when his Chevrolet Camaro veered from eastbound Interstate 80 two miles west of Interstate 55 and plunged into a 15-foot pond. State Police say he fell asleep at 9:25 a.m. and the car sank with Jarvis inside. Will County Coroner Willard Blood handled the case. Funeral plans set at Memorial Park Cemetery Skokie with services Friday at 10 a.m. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery Skokie.

Grundy County Health Board discusses funding and services

Grundy County Health Department reviewed state grant rules and budget pressures at Edwards Street offices Tuesday. Administrator Mary Reed said the county will get about 32000 in grants, eyed a fee rise for school health services, and discussed merit system questions and proposed state guidelines.

Weather outlook with showers and cooling trends

The forecast calls for cloudy, windy conditions with a few brief showers and cooler highs in the lower to middle 60s. Tonight remains partly cloudy with a low near 40, followed by partly sunny weather on Thursday with highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Earlier readings show Tuesday’s high 65 at Dresden Island Locks and Dam and a 40 low, with 7 am readings at 53 in Morris and 63 downtown by 11 am.

Accident injures Kinsman youth in Illinois 113 crash

Michael L. Sulzberger, 19, of Route 1 Kinsman, was injured in an early morning crash on Illinois 113 near Jugtown Road. His 1971 Camaro ran off the road, vaulted a ditch, hit a culvert, and landed on its wheels in the ditch. He was taken to Morris Hospital for observation.

Pogliano Dies On Farm Near Morris After Collapse

Robert Pogliano a Goose Lake Township farmer and long time school board member collapsed on his farm east of Morris Tuesday night. Coroner James Reeves ordered an autopsy. Pogliano was found about 8 p.m. in the cattle yard and funeral services will be announced by Reeves Funeral Home Coal City.

Goldwater Presses Nixon on Leadership Amid Watergate Shadow

Sen. Barry Goldwater urged President Nixon to move toward leadership as Sen. Stuart Symington charged aides obstructed justice by hiding Watergate under a CIA umbrella. Nixon proposed a 17 member nonpartisan commission to reexamine elections and campaign practices. James McCord Jr. claims White House sought cover, while Liddy faces continued contempt and immunity in testimony. Symington summarized Walters and Gray accounts detailing a possible White House coverup after the Watergate arrests.

Saratoga School Board Approves Plan for 300-Student Middle School

The Saratoga School Board heard architect plans for a 300 student middle school to be built north of the current facility along Illinois 47. Cost for phase one is about 985000 with potential to expand to 600 students. Bonding power remains uncertain due to property tax considerations.

Jail inmate Lester Sellers suffers back injury from step collapse

Lester Sellers, 35, of 211 Nettle Town Dr., is reported in good condition at St. Joseph Hospital Joliet after a May 3 fall when a jail step broke. He is under guard, held on $100,000 bail since April 12 on three counts of taking indecent liberties with a child.

Shabbona District Scout Show Set for Saturday at Morris

The Shabbona District Scout Show comes to Morris at Shabbona School this Saturday from 1 to 8 p.m. More than 400 boys and 100 leaders from Grundy County will display scouting skills with units from Braceville Minooka Coal City South Wilmington Mazon and Morris. Chuck Turner of Morris chairs the event with a full committee and new features include a Little Theater area with over twenty acts and a Challenge Area for Pinewood Derby tug of war log sawing and wall sealing. Reimann and Piche Face Murder and Robbery Charges

The trial of Carl Reimann 32 of Sandwich and Betty Piche 30 of Somonauk opens Monday in Rockford. Each faces five counts of murder and one count each of armed robbery and theft for the December 29 Pine Village Steak House killings and robbery at Illinois 47 and U.S. 34 north of Yorkville.

Historical society bus trip to Will County Museum and Canal Days

The Grundy County Historical Society will take a bus trip to the Will County Historical Museum in Lockport for a guided tour. Afterward the group attends the Canal Days celebration and returns to Morris for a smorgasbord dinner at the Nordic House in Romeoville. The outing replaces the May meeting, departing Morris Community High School at 1:30 p.m. Reservations contact Mrs. Helen Tascher at 942-0142.
