Morris City Council vote 7 to 0 approves a 20 percent rise in water bills starting in August. The increase funds the new secondary sewage plant and supports emergency repairs with a small $13,762 balance.
A giant eastern cottonwood west of Gebhard Woods State Park is declared Illinois state champion by the Department of Conservation. The tree reaches 120 feet in height with a 1111-foot crown spread and a 27 foot 4 inch trunk girth, surpassing the previous Green County sycamore record.
The Red Cross blood mobile drew 128 pints Monday at the United Presbyterian Church in Morris, 22 pints shy of the 150 pint goal. Eighty-three donors were first-time or repeat, with 164 residents registering and 37 rejected. Participants included 24 first-time donors, 97 with advance appointments, and civic groups aiding with posters and canteen services.
A brisk northwest wind and arctic air mass sweep Illinois with sun in the north and west. Forecasters say the cold spell continues at least through Wednesday with partly cloudy skies and flurries tonight, lows 10 to 20. Wednesday will be mostly sunny but chilly with highs from near 30 to the 40s. Monoethylene glycol will be made at the Morris plant and shipped to Mapleton, Illinois for packaging, with the deal running May 1, 1971 to April 30, 1972 and potential sales totaling $257,145.
The Coal City Village Board approved advertising for bids March 25 for a new library building in the city park with bids due April 12 at 4 p.m. The 40 by 80 foot block and brick veneer structure will cost under 50 000 and include central heating and air conditioning two washrooms and indoor outdoor carpeting.
A Minooka Village Board meeting approved transferring sanitary and storm sewer lines from East Acres Subdivision to the village. The actions set inceptor-connector fees of 3600 dollars per 10 acres served and authorized an ordinance transferring easement rights to the village. Forty acres remain for future development using these lines.
A kickoff program for the 1971 Grundy County Cancer Crusade will begin at 8 p.m. Thursday at the First National Bank of Morris. James Gordon Gilkey Jr. of Carson, Pirie Scott & Co will attend as Crusade coordinator for the Illinois division of the American Cancer Society and speak to volunteers and interested persons.
