President Johnson urges Congress to pass truth in lending and truth in packaging laws to protect consumers. He calls for clear disclosure of credit costs and packaging contents, including ingredients, with safety labels on hazardous substances and restrained sale of risky toys and drugs.
Tonight at 7 30 p m the Morris Planning Commission meets in Morris Community High School auditorium to present the comprehensive planning map for public comment. Participants may submit written statements or speak orally in support or opposition.
Spring has arrived across the nation with 8:53 p.m. Sunday marking the official onset. Crowds fill NYC parks despite clouds while California swallows return to nests and deserts bloom. The first filing day for the June 14 primary drew brisk activity as 21 petitions were filed or mailed with County Clerk Nels P. Nelson also submitting his bid for re election. Four county offices, 16 precinct committeeman spots, and one state representative committeeman were pursued by Republicans and Democrats alike with several named candidates listed.
The U S Weather Bureau forecasts intermittent showers for the first three days of the week with highs in the 60s until Wednesday when temperatures fall. Sunday’s high at Collins Weather Station was 55 with a 44 low. 9 am reading today was 54. A light shower overnight measured .05 inch.
The Supreme Court rules publications designed to appeal to prurient interests are not protected by free speech. Justice Brennan upholds Ralph Ginzburg’s five year sentence for Eros magazine under federal obscenity law, in a 5-4 decision. The case sharpens the Roth standard with emphasis on prurient appeal and social value.
A Morris bartender and a 17 year old Newark youth pleaded guilty to illegal sale and purchase of alcohol. Each was fined 100 dollars plus costs. Pawlowski faced 5 dollars and Wicks 10.30 dollars. Both paid fines and were released.
Within six hours three Morris men were arrested in Lisbon on charges of breaking and entering the Lisbon Imple ment Co. and theft at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Harold Crumb 29, William Crumb 23, and Arthur Lawrence 20 faced bonds of 15000 and 10000 respectively. The trio confessed partially after a tip led deputies to a car containing stolen church items and cash.
Firefighters battled a Sunday blaze that gutted two apartment homes and most of the Nelson Florists Flower Shop at 833 E North St. origin and extent of loss undetermined. Residents evacuated with heavy smoke and water damage as a wall failure spread flames to the shop portion. The Morris Fire Department fought the fire for nearly five hours.
Three New York City papers announce a merger to form World Journal Tribune Inc. The New York Journal American and World Telegram and the Sun will combine as World Journal. The Sunday editions of Journal American and Herald Tribune merge into World Journal and Tribune. The deal reduces the number of papers in Manhattan to five general circulation titles.
The U S Weather Bureau at noon issued a bulletin warning of a severe thunderstorm with large hail and damaging winds from noon to 6 p m. The storm is expected along a corridor 60 miles either side of a line from 40 miles west of Kirksville to 60 miles southeast of Rockford, centered just north of the junction of U S 52 and Thi nois 47 near Morris.
A one car crash on I-55 three miles north of Gardner left Lester H. Clayton 49 of Joliet with serious facial injuries after his 1966 Chrysler swerved on a bridge over Mazon Creek. Clayton was treated at a hospital as state police investigated the incident. In a separate crash nearby a pickup and house trailer flipped on I-55 five miles south of Gardner causing no injuries to driver Robert Groves 29 of Springfield and an unidentified passenger.
U S forces report sustained combat with Viet Cong north and east of Saigon. Marines engaged near Hue in a helicopter assault while other units claim high enemy casualties. Aerial losses include six planes with two killed two captured and two missing.
