POW Releases Bring 34 Prisoners Home To Marcos Welcome

At Clark Air Base in the Philippines 34 prisoners of war were released by Viet Cong forces in Hanoi. Among them were 27 American military personnel, three American civilians, two West German medical workers and the only foreign woman, nurse Monika Schwinn. President Marcos greeted the arrivals with Adm. Noel Gaylor and U.S. Ambassador Henry A Byroade present.

Pope elevates 30 cardinals as throne of conclave opens

Pope Paul VI elevated 30 prelates to the College of Cardinals, including three Americans Archbishops Manning Medeiros and Martinies, and revealed two in pectore cardinals from Communist lands Bishop Trochta and Bishop Hossu. Hossu had died in 1970. The papal surprise urged broader inclusion of bishops in conclave elections. Cardinal body reaches 145, a record.

No petitions filed yet for Morris public schools board positions. Filing runs through March 23 for the April 14 election. Morris Community High School Board terms end for Jack Santa Cruz and Kenneth Davenport. Grade School Board terms end for James A. Peterson Donald F. Zwiers and Gerald McTague. Robert Hecht and Phillip Zink seek re election at Saratoga Grade School. Nettle Creek District 24C board terms end for William Burnham Donald McCarter and Thomas Thorsen.

Blair raps Walker at Grundy County Lincoln Day event

Illinois House Speaker W Robert Blair assailed Gov. Dan Walker while praising Gov. Richard Ogilvie at a Morris Lincoln Day gathering. About 270 attendees heard Blair, a six term lawmaker, call for an independent legislative course and vow to oppose Walker administration moves seen as harming Illinois taxpayers. Present were Rep. James Washburn, Rep. George Ryan, and Sen. Edward McBroom. James Stine received a Republican service award.

Cat captured after four days of hide and seek

A cat holed up under a house at 419 East Main Street was caught by Morris police at 9 45 a m Saturday after four days on the run. It reportedly bit 11 year old Letha Brown of 326 East Jefferson Street on the right hand early Wednesday. The animal was taken to Dr Edward Connor for observation. Life is mostly a mixture of grin and bitters.

Driver Injured Charles Street Jr. In Flossmoor Incident

Charles F. Street Jr. of Flossmoor was injured in a crash and remains in fair condition. Police described the incident and say he sustained non life threatening injuries. Investigators are continuing to gather details at the scene.

Annexation and zoning hearing for Washburns request

The Morris Planning Commission will hold a 7:30 p.m. public hearing at the First National Bank of Morris on 220 W. Main St regarding the annexation and B-III commercial zoning petition filed by Mr and Mrs Robert Washburn of 8 9 E North St represented by Atty John Hynds. The parcel fronts U S 6 and measures 100 feet by 217.8 feet. Also in the report a fatal-like highway crash on I 80 near Brown Rd left Street hospitalized after a 11:15 p.m. Friday collision with James J Williams. Street cited for speeding.

Mazon petitions available at Meadors office

Nominating petitions for the Mazon Community Unit District No. 2 Board of Education are now available in Arthur Meadors’s office at the Grundy County educational service region in the courthouse. Hours are 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Filing runs March 21 to April 13. election day is May 3. Seven members will be chosen. terms set by lot at the organizational meeting for one, two, and three years.

Absent Ballots Open for Morris Township Elections

Absentee ballot applications are accepted by mail through March 29 and in person through March 31. Township election day is April 3. Voters should contact Township Clerk Mrs Edward Pack. Eight polling sites listed include Grundy County Courthouse and Morris City Hall. In caucus Feb 6 at the courthouse Republicans nominated Phillip Braun for supervisor and incumbents Pack and Lois for clerk and assessor. Four town auditor candidates were chosen: Chester Winsor, Willard Sheedy Sr., Rome Graham, and Thomas Steele. No Democratic candidates have been announced.
