In Sparta Illinois 48 000 empty beer cans were used to build a 750 foot solar energy collector at the high school vocational center. Fostered by Michael Cundiff and Richard E Archer the project repurposed cans riveted to a plate painted black into a three panel solar air heater. The system heated air to 120 degrees while outdoor temps fell to 18.

Soybeans and corn exports rise in early 1979
URBANA Ill. AP The United States has shipped more corn and soybeans in the year so far than the first two months of 1978. Corn exports through early February reached 594 million bushels versus 555 million a year earlier. University of Illinois economist Darrel Good notes the pace may not reach the 1.95 billion bushels projected for the year but should rise with better transportation and warmer weather. He calls the rapid domestic use of corn for livestock feed a pleasant surprise, citing an 11 percent rise in the first quarter of the marketing year. Soybean exports through early February total nearly 378 million bushels, about 27 percent above last year, with soybean meal and oil also up around 12 percent. Good warns available U S supplies may prevent sustaining the current rate and southern hemisphere harvests, especially Brazil, will pose competition while drought trims expected yields. If demand stays strong further price increases may be needed to ration supplies.

Man killed near Dwight after highway chase
An unidentified man was shot and killed near Dwight Illinois after attempting to drive through a state police roadblock on Interstate 55 near Illinois 47 around 4 a.m. A 30 mile high speed chase began near Chenoa when police tried to stop a northbound vehicle with an expired plate.
