A Coast Guard cutter and a tugboat broke through a massive ice jam to open a 300 foot channel in the Mississippi River toward the Rock Island Dam. The operation involved the tug Peoria, cutter Sumac, and tug A M Thompson clearing empty barges as night temperatures hovered near freezing. Flooding had displaced about 400 families but was easing as the river dropped.

Harold P. Streit of Elgin, 41, died when a propane truck collided with a snowplow on Illinois 113 four miles east of Custer Park at 8 05 a m. Snowplow driver William J. Tenn 45 of Braidwood escaped injury. The truck swerved and struck the plow then left the road, the coroner said. State police unsure if propane loaded.

Former Morris Resident Dies in Viet Nam
Richard A. Marshall 19 formerly of Morris died in Viet Nam on February 21 from heavy weapons fire. He had moved to Riverside California seven years earlier with his parents and was a radioman with the First Cavalry Division. Survivors include his parents in Riverside a brother in the Navy two sisters in California a grandmother in Ottawa and an uncle in Morris. The family was notified late Sunday and his body will be shipped to the Davis Funeral Home with arrangements pending arrival.

Driver Thrown From Automobile in Icy Wreck west of Morris
Thomas B. Dillon 21 of Route 3 lost control of a 1960 Chevrolet on an icy road two miles west of Sis Drive-In south of Morris. He was thrown from the car after it hit a fence and tree, was treated at Morris Hospital, and later released. The damage included 100 feet of fence and extensive car damage. the Sam White property fence was involved.
