Rural women form group to press hearings on countryside issues
Rural American Women Inc. plans regional hearings to document problems from transportation to health services and education. Led by Jane Threatt, the coalition aims to represent up to half of rural America within a year, seeking funding from agencies and foundations for national hearings under a House subcommittee.

Carbondale Police Reject City 6.3 Percent Hike
Carbondale police officers voted unanimously to reject a 6.3 percent salary increase offered for 10 months, opting not to strike. They will appeal Circuit Judge Richmond's recent arbitration ruling while noting the city’s 5.7 percent 12 month proposal. Contingency plans exist if a strike occurs, with nonunion officers covering patrols.

Snowmobile grant applications due July 21 from local agencies
Springfield The last date the Department of Conservation will accept applications from local government units for 1978 state snowmobile grant-in-aid is July 31. Grants are partial reimbursements up to 50 percent of project costs for municipalities townships counties park and forest preserve districts or other land managing bodies for snowmobile trail development or facilities.
