The National Gallery of Art opens the East Building designed by I M Pei with a 19 degree knife-edge corner, 107 feet high, part of a geometric complex linking to the Mellon legacy. The $95 million project, funded by Andrew W Mellon’s heirs and foundation, houses exhibitions from ancient to modern art and features a skylighted central court and frosted glass tetrahedrons.
