Reno boom town expands with MGM Grand and growth
Reno, the Biggest Little City in the World, drives a surge of 33,000 new residents by 1980 as MGM Grand opens a massive 131 million dollar resort. New hotels, 10,000 casino patrons at a time, and a spreading economy bring air and water pollution worries, housing shortages, and school strain, while Harrah’s and Sahara-Reno expand downtown to keep pace.

EPA to weigh diesel exhaust cancer risk and power car sales
The EPA plans a six month study on diesel exhaust particles to assess cancer risk and likely tighten emission standards. If strict measures pass, U.S. and foreign automakers may curb diesel output growth even as demand rises. GM projects over 25 percent of cars diesel powered by 1985. Mercedes Benz, VW and other makers target U.S. diesel sales this year, while Fiat Volvo and Mazda also pursue North American diesels. A 19th century power-model dish washer note closes the piece.
