H G Sowards of 520 W Washington St leads 15 residents in a 20 minute speech before the City Council on air pollution and traffic problems in their district. He argues the city limits should not allow a fertilizer plant and calls for city machinery and authority to address the issues.
A group led by Sowards demanded a city response within a week after airing concerns about air pollution from the Corn Belt fertilizer plant on W Washington St. Residents cited hard-to-breathe conditions and odors, plus parking and noise issues. Mayor Hansen promised a legal review and a timely answer.
Morris City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting trucks over six tons from George St between Division St and Lisbon Rd, with deliveries allowed and a $1 to $100 fine. Deliveries are limited to one block. Judiciary committee prepared the amendment and council backed it. Alderman John Nelson was absent.
Coroner W Clark Davis continued to pursue leads today seeking relatives of Michael Paul Farrell 67 a hitchhiker who died Friday night from injuries sustained in a two car collision June 18 on Illinois 47 about a half mile south of Morris Airport at Morris Hospital.
Intermittent showers or thunderstorms are possible tonight with a low in the 60s. Wednesday brings partly sunny skies and highs in the 80s with another chance of brief thundershowers. The Collins Weather Station logged a Monday high of 80 and a low of 55, with 72 at 9 am and 73 downtown Morris at 11:15 am.
Frank Vitek of Mazon files a mandamus petition against the Grundy County Board of Supervisors over trailer park licensing. The suit challenges a December 1966 amendment deeming Vitek’s park a non conforming use cited with alleged bad faith and discrimination. The matter includes court notices and continuances as hearings proceed in magistrate court.
Coal City Village Council announced opening bids for a new roof on the Coal City Village Hall starting today. The meeting also approved annexing the McCluckie and Flavor Drive-in properties, with a motion to keep two Broadway Street and Carbon Hill Road lots out of the Fire District. Tony Scubie of DeWitt Place was named special policeman.
Frank J. Janes 19 of Joliet Ill died today when the car struck a guard rail on U S 41 four miles north of Lyford. Driver Donald L Sealey Chicago said Janes woke and fell against him causing loss of control. Janes was thrown from the car. Lyford is sixteen miles north of Terre Haute.
Battery charges against Richard Jacklich of Carbon Hill were dismissed after the complainant Pete Kapogiannis failed to appear in court. A separate reckless driving charge against Jacklich was continued for two weeks. the clash also involved Jim Kutzschebauch of Joliet at the Dairy Castle Tastee Freeze near Coal City.
George Emanuelson 41 of rural Morris and formerly of Coal City pleaded guilty in Chicago federal district court to a bank robbery charge tied to the Grundy County National Bank in Morris on April 10. Judge Richard Austin delayed sentencing to July 10 for a probation report. Emanuelson remained jailed in Cook County after failing to post $2,000 bond.
Three Joliet men died in a headon collision on U S 6 east of Joliet Monday night. The victims were Lemarr Thompson 57 his twin Lama Thompson 57 and Jesse Edwards 55 all from Joliet.
Ronald Evans of Seely and Evans presented a 15 minute audit review to Morris council recommending tighter controls on water accounts and collections, data processing use, perforated vouchers, bond adequacy, and asset accounting. Council approved the audit 7 to 0 with Alderman Nelson absent.
Carbon Hill marks its 75th anniversary with a five day homecoming from July 12 to 16. Activities include softball games, a band concert, a two part barn dance, soccer and baseball games, a parade, and a large fireworks display. Ten dances run nightly and a souvenir booklet with town history is in print. Contact Mrs. Robert King at 634-8279 for parade entries.
The Illinois Senate narrowly passed a package to issue 100 million dollars in bonds for recreational areas pending House concurrence. A penny per pack cigarette tax would fund repayment if approved next year by voters. Other actions included metal studded tire legalization and open meetings rules.
An Illinois manufacturers official accused state agencies of land grabbing during a Grundy County Board of Supervisors session discussing Goose Lake Prairie park. He advocated using land in White Side, Iroquois, and Des Plaines counties for industry instead. The board agreed to study the land search and approved a $9,704 planning grant with Carl Gardner Associates, adjourning to July 13.
At the United Nations in New York United States and Soviet Union remain at loggerheads over the Middle East crisis. Kosygin demands an immediate Israeli troop pullback as a precondition for peace while Johnson seeks linkage to a broader settlement. Diplomats foresee a recess for two or three days to pursue negotiations.
Repairs on the Rock Island crossing near Price Street are near completion with blacktop expected to begin later today per local agent Pete Martinez. Work started a week ago and may finish by the weekend as planks and a complete crossing on the north house track are installed.
Morris City Council authorized Atty. Robert Wren to begin condemnation if the Brown Milling Co building on Washington St. does not cooperate. The move follows discussion of a possible big suit if someone is hurt. Alderman James Stine urged boarding up first and possibly second floors to protect children.
