Morris pacers at Sportsman's Park

Bill Barry of Chevelle Stables trains pacers at Circle A Farm two miles west of Illinois 47 on US 6. A pacer races with a cart and driver and alternates leg movement unlike a trotter. Barry, father of Circle A Farm's Francis Barry, had open heart surgery but recovered to continue training.

Eight year old boy killed in Gardner train collision

Brian Reader eight of Route 1 Gardner was killed when his bicycle struck a westbound Illinois Central Gulf freight train at Division Street. He died at the scene and was later moved to Gardner Funeral Home. The train was traveling 47 mph with 18 freight cars and two engines. Funeral services for Brian Keith Reader will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Gardner Funeral Home.

Grundy County Board of Review Shifts Schedule

The Grundy County Board of Review will pause regular meetings until July 5 and then assess capital stock July 5 to July 8. From July 12 to Aug 7 hearings will run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday for county property owners. Members are David Barr Lawrence Manning and Edwin Burnham.

Morris district approves 18 credit graduation rule

Morris Community High School District 101 votes 6 to 1 to raise graduation credits to 18 for all classes after 1980 while class of 1980 will need 17 credits. The measure aims to align with expanded curriculum, though one member warned it may push students to quit.

Morris Public Library offers summer library cards to out of town kids

Mrs. Carol Hutchings issued $1 summer library cards to Scott Hansen 7 Janis Hansen 9 and Jodi Hansen 11 of Mazon at the Morris Public Library. Cards run until Aug 31 to encourage reading during summer. About 30 cards sold this year with 67 last year. Also a rezoning hearing on 65 acres north of U.S. 6 near the Rockwell Inn from agriculture to R1 will be held 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Grundy County Courthouse.

Union talks stall but area workers back on job

Union leaders have ordered about 3,000 construction workers in 14 north central Illinois counties to return to work after a seven week strike. Talks with contractors continue over job classifications while pay raises will be retroactive to today and workers return under old contract terms.

Fairbury boy killed in tractor accident

Scott Moser, six, of Fairbury, Illinois, died Wednesday when a tractor on his family’s farm overturned after a sharp turn. Coroner Keith VonQualen said he was driving and was pinned beneath the vehicle. he died at the scene.
