Illinois Noxious Weed and Seed Laws Take Effect
Springfield reports the 1971 noxious weed law and seed law, signed by Gov. Richard Ogilvie, become effective July 1. The weed law empowers county and state officials to control weeds, imposes fines up to 100 dollars first offense and 200 dollars for later offenses, and may allow county taxes for weed control after a referendum. Noxious weeds include marijuana, ragweeds, Canada thistle, musk thistle, sow thistle, and Johnsongrass and related sorghums. The seed law repeals the old statute and requires labeling to standardize seed sales across sectors.
