Mekong Delta clash leaves 169 Viet Cong dead in one night battle

U S forces push into the Mekong Delta near Saigon and clash with Viet Cong. The fighting ends with 28 American infantrymen killed and 126 wounded, four helicopters shot down, as U S air and naval units support a heavy river and canal assault. Other actions leave 13 Americans killed in related engagements in Binh Dinh and northern I Corps.

Joliet Teachers Fined for Court Contempt in Strike

Judge Michael A. Orenie fined Local 604 of the American Federation of Teachers and 12 Will County teachers $7500 and $200 respectively for willful contempt of court. The ruling cites violation of a temporary injunction restricting picketing on Joliet school campuses during the District 205 strike. 233 other striking teachers had charges dismissed.

Goose Lake School Will Remain Same

Coal City Unit No 1 Board of Education approved purchasing three warning radio receivers for the high school and Goose Lake Grade School. Enrollment figures for Goose Lake Grade School were reviewed and a plan to lease two kindergarten rooms at $3.50 per student per month was authorized. Salary increases of seven percent were granted to custodians secretaries and cafeteria staff.

Committee to Study Zoning Formation Moves Forward

A six member committee from the Morris Planning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals was appointed to set a public hearing. The group will meet next Monday at 7 30 p m to hear building certificate requests and clarify issues. Sheriff Pierce won an septic tank permit with a six month hookup requirement to future city sewer lines. The Downtown Planning Committee plans a fundraising drive with a total cost of 19141 and a federal grant of 12734.

Downtown Plan Group Sets Meeting on Funding Drive

Mor ris businesses contributed 1 455 toward a 3 183 goal to fund a downtown planning program. The drive aims to match city funds and a 12 734 federal grant for a 19 141 project. James Baum reported 180 letters mailed June 5 at a Morris planning joint meeting. A Downtown Planning Committee session will be held at 7 30 p m Thursday at the Morris Savings and Loan building.

Four Grundy County Men Inducted for Service Today

Mrs. Bernyce Heggen announced four Grundy County men left Morris for Chicago induction into the armed forces. They are Robert L. Wright of Gardner Gary L. Hyslop of Verona Richard D. Mickelson of Minooka and Thomas H. Thompson of Morris. The July call will be six for induction and ten for physical examinations.

U.S. proposes five point peace plan for Middle East

The United States proposed a five point peace program for Arab Israeli negotiations with third party help. The plan demands mutual recognition of borders, free maritime passage, fair refugee solutions, armament limits, and recognition of sovereign states. Ambassador Goldberg urged a new foundation for peace at the United Nations session.

Man in Critical Condition After Boating Accident

Jack Major, 36, of Coal City, was injured in a boating accident on the Kankakee River near the Grundy Will line at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. He suffered a bruised cheek fractured left arm and left clavicle and possible internal injuries after the boat struck two pilings. Major, a Local No. 75 construction worker, is at Morris Hospital with nonreported official details pending.

Blood Drive Totals at Red Cross Center

At 1 30 p m today 34 pints of blood were collected at the American Red Cross bloodmobile in Kenrick Hall. A county quota of 200 pints must be reached by 5 30 p m today with 166 pints still needed.

Illinois 47 resurfacing bid listed for July 7

A project to resurface 2.65 miles of Illinois 47 south of the Illinois River is among 112 bids due July 7. The Division of Highways at Springfield, led by Francis S. Lorenz, says the section will receive bituminous resurfacing.

Autopsy Sought on Grundy County Drowning Victim

A 16 year old from Plainfield Township, Marion Carroll, drowned at Grundy County Red and Gun Club beach east of Morris. An autopsy was ordered as coroner W Clark Davis noted the cause remains unexplained. Carroll, a football basketball and track athlete, swam with a Joliet church group. lifeguards and emergency crews recovered his body about 2 pm.

Relatives Sought for Injured Man in Illinois Auto Crash

Grundy County authorities search for Farrell relatives after a Sunday Illinois 47 collision. Michael Paul Farrell 67 poor condition at Morris Hospital, hurt when thrown onto the road shoulder. He was a hitchhiker in a crash vehicle driven by 17 year old Lawrence Meyers Jr of Cary. deputies sift through Farrell possessions for a home address, finding only a 1953 Chicago card and a leather valise with cooking items.
