Ambulance Fire Destroys Vehicle Near Coal City

A 1966 Cadillac ambulance transporting a body from West Allis Wisconsin to Vandalia Illinois caught fire on Interstate 55 one mile north of Illinois 113. Driver Michael Terry of West Allis and an unidentified attendant escaped as the engine flames spread. The casket and body were removed before the Coal City Fire Department arrived and were taken to Reeves Funeral Home then to Vandalia.

Hoffman Chosen as Circuit Judge for Illinois Bar Meeting

Leonard Hoffman of Morris was selected to preside Wednesday afternoon during the Illinois Bar Association annual meeting in Peoria. A demonstration of trial techniques will be shown with a film on an accident and participation by Chicago lawyers.

Coal City Girl Burns in Inn Grease Blast

An 18 year old Coal City girl suffered first and second degree burns in a grease explosion at the Saratoga Inn. Val erie Stefko, daughter of Mr and Mrs Mike Stefko, was burned on her back arm and face and was improving at Morris Hospital.

Two-Car Crash Near Morris Injures Three

A Sunday crash on Illinois 47 south of Morris Hospital involved a 1961 Pontiac driven by Lawrence T. Meyers Jr. and another vehicle towing a trailer. Passenger Michael Paul Farrell, 67, of Hallard, was critically injured, with Meyers, Ruth Ann O’Neill, and Donald M. Theis sustaining minor injuries. All were treated at Morris Hospital.

Redman Promoted at Dresden Nuclear Plant

George L. Redman, 1007 Alann Drive Joliet, named assistant superintendent of Dresden nuclear power station in a Commonwealth Edison Co release. He joined in 1947 after earning a University of Illinois mechanical engineering degree and has worked mainly at Dresden.

Guerrilla battalion repelled in night assault near Saigon

About 500 Viet Cong attacked the U S cavalry bivouac 40 miles east of Saigon but faced a heavy 175mm artillery and air cover. Eight U S soldiers were killed and 31 wounded in the one hour battle as 45 Viet Cong were found dead and 13 captured. American planes bombed rail lines to Hanoi and attacked targets including the Thai Nguyen steel plant.

Youths Nabbed After Stolen Car Pursuit Near Morris

Two Chicago youths Eugene Ward age 17 and Charles Delaney 16 escaped from the Marseilles Youth Camp Sunday stole a car and headed east on Interstate 80. Roadblocks by state county and Morris police halted the pursuit and Trooper Jack O Hagan halted the vehicle when it crashed. They were captured and jailed in Grundy County pending transfer to La Salle County authorities.

Riverfront tragedy claims Joliet teen at Rod and Gun Club

A 16 year old boy from Joliet drowned at the Rod and Gun Club this afternoon. Morris Fire Department rescue squad was alerted about 1 30 p m and recovered the body shortly before 2 p m. County Coroner W Clark Davis had no additional details at 2 40 p m.

Kosygin Demands Israeli Withdraw From Occupied Lands

Soviet Premier Kosygin told a U.N. General Assembly emergency session that Israel must withdraw from the Suez Canal zone and other occupied territories to create conditions for Middle East peace. He blamed the United States for encouraging Israel and warned that renewed fighting could trigger nuclear war. He pledged Soviet action within and outside the U.N. to end aggression and foster peace.

Nasser Names Himself to Head Cabinet in Egypt

President Gamal Abdel Nasser announced a wide cabinet reorganization and named himself premier. Cairo Radio said five vice presidents were appointed, including Zakaria Mohieddin, with Sidhu Soliman removed as premier and named vice president and minister of industry and power.
