Bus Carrying Youths Struck by Freight Train Near Dwight
A charter bus with 58 youths age 11 to 18 from Chicago destined for Sunset Hill Bible Camp was struck by a westbound New York Central freight train on U S Route 66 near Dwight, catching fire. Four dozen passengers, including driver James Oldham, were treated. 12 admitted to St James Hospital, and 27 released. Most injuries were minor, with the bus left lodged front against the locomotive. the accident halted traffic and prompted emergency response from multiple agencies.

Burglars Take 22 Dollars From Church Office
Police report a break-in at First Methodist Church Jackson and Wauponsee Streets. Between 8:30 and 9:50 p m Sunday burglars pried open a steel file cabinet and took 22 dollars in change plus stamps. They left coin banks and a tire iron. Rev Harold R Dude surprised them.

A 17 year old Joliet boy, Michael Gurnic, drowned Sunday in the Kankakee River near the county line bridge while swimming with family at the McDade cottage. Hartley Sentenced in Vandalia Burglary Case
John Hartley Jr. 20 of Ei leen was placed on one year probation and six months at the Illinois State Farm after pleading guilty to burglary for allegedly stealing tools from Charles O'Brien and Son Construction Co. on January 12. James Bendel and Terry Frost, both 18 and from Wilmington, saw their cases continued to September 12 with bail reductions for two other theft defendants. Freeman Perry 18 and John Puckett 19 of Wilmington appeared as well, with bonds reduced and defense motions granted. Sheriff Olson had brought the group back from Muscatine Iowa where they were held in connection with the thefts. The magistrate set bonds at 5,000 on each charge.
