Farmers oppose ban on stock raising by packers
Washington reports indicate Agriculture Department officials will oppose Rep. Neal Smith’s bill to eliminate most livestock raising by packers and supermarket chains. NFU Secretary Robert G. Lewis says agency officials privately back no immediate move toward government interference, arguing packer feeding has not increased and isn’t a current problem. The NFU supports Smith’s bill to prevent monopolies and preserve family farming, arguing quick passage is needed to stop price manipulation.
