Thompson to sign bill to pay workers in Illinois

Governor James R. Thompson planned to sign most of a bill shifting 8.6 million within the Transportation Department budget to prevent 6,000 workers from losing their jobs. The measure, approved by the Legislature as H3380, faces potential further cuts but would keep payrolls funded through June under the state constitution. The bill also seeks 22.5 million to reimburse half fare for student and elderly bus riders, with Democrats seeking 24.3 million. Political friction erupted over overtime caused by severe winter weather and overall budget shifts.

Skylab to test maneuver to correct faulty orbit

NASA scientists prepared Skylab for a week long maneuver to adjust its orbit and prevent re entry. Computers began charging batteries ahead of the Friday test and officials at Johnson Space Center aim to keep the 84 ton lab in a stable path until a shuttle can push it into a higher orbit or guide a safe Earth return. Skylab circles Earth every 90 minutes at 242 miles with three gyroscopes, one failed in 1973 and another overheated, while solar panels stay sunward as effort to reduce drag continues.
