Channahon Woman Killed in Hit and Run Crash

A 36 year old Channahon woman Mrs George Jean Mank was struck and killed at Smith Road and a frontage road by a light green pickup truck that left the scene. She was pronounced dead at St Joseph Hospital Joliet and the driver fled north on the frontage road. The sheriff and coroner cited multiple injuries and a 27 foot throw distance before the vehicle, which left the roadway 117 feet before impact. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at O Neil Funeral Home Chapel Lockport with burial in Resurrection Cemetery Romeoville.

Mitchell and Haldeman Ordered to Start Prison Terms

John Mitchell and H R Haldeman were ordered to begin sentences of 30 months to eight years for obstructing justice conspiracy and perjury in the Watergate cover up. They have two weeks to arrange personal affairs before reporting to a DC marshal on June 22.

Theft at Disco service station nets 486 dollars

Morris police report a $486 theft from the Disco service station cash drawer on Saturday. Attendants Mark Martin and Kevin Cassidy, and manager Lonnie Hood describe the missing money found in the safe during shift changes and later confirmed by the manager. Police also log two vehicle thefts, a CB radio and gear, plus two bicycle thefts from weekend incidents.

Illinois death penalty bill faces Supreme Court ruling

Illinois senators and Rep. Roman Kosinski say the U S Supreme Court ruling invalidating an automatic death for police slayers in Louisiana does not imperil Illinois H10 which mirrors Georgia style mitigating factor provisions. The bill awaits House concurrence and then Governor Thompson's signature with automatic Illinois Supreme Court review of death penalties.

Two-vehicle collision in Kendall County kills woman

A head on crash on Illinois 71 at Budd Road left Susan L. Hilliard aged 53 of Marion dead at the scene. Betty Smoot, also of Marion, was treated and released at Copley Hospital. Dan F. Lindner of Sandwich is in good condition after crossing the centerline in the second vehicle. The state police report cites Lindner as crossing the centerline before the collision. Morris Public Library Board meets at 7 30 p m tonight in the library multipurpose room for regular monthly reports.

Theft and stolen boat reported in Grundy County

Elvis Scoles of Seventh St Maron reported cash and checks totaling 400 stolen from his home at 12 20 p m Friday. Only a small amount of cash missing most of the loss consisting of checks to Southern Baptist Mission. An aluminum 12 foot boat chained to a tree at Rod and Gun Club area north of Bungalow Rd was taken after 9 p m last Monday and later found by Ray Carlson at 200 Pleasant St with the chain damaged.

Car Train Crash Injures Centralia Man Near Godley

Donald E. White, 26, was injured when his 1968 Oldsmobile was struck by Amtrak No. 303 southbound train at the County Line Road crossing near Illinois 53 in Godley. He was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet in good condition. no train passengers were hurt.

Driver Injured In One Car Crash Near Dwight

Dwight resident Kyle Schramm 39 was admitted to Morris Hospital after a single vehicle accident on Goodfarm Road near Illinois 47. His damaged 1968 Chevrolet was towed, and he remained for observation.

Tools Stolen From Parked Trucks In Grundy County Weekend

Five thefts reported to Grundy County Sheriff's Department over the weekend. Items stolen include a Coleman lantern, hacksaw, skill saw, drill and bits, ladders, hammers, cords, wrenches and screwdrivers from a Ford pickup at Altmax. other garages lost fishing gear, lanterns, a drill, rods and reels, and a trolling motor with tackle box.

Power Outage Slated in Morris Areas for Two Mornings

Commonwealth Edison official Dan Demps says voltage conversions require brief power interruptions in Morris on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Areas affected include blocks around Jackson Main Liberty Spruce for 6 to 8 a.m. and 5:30 to 8 a.m. respectively. Also on the agenda Morris Community High School Board meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday to discuss resignations and hires.
