Air War Deepens in Vietnam With Bombing Raid

American jets hit rail lines to Hanoi and dispatched 113 North Vietnam strike missions along with four B52 raids on South Vietnam. MIG interceptors engaged, three fighters reported shot down, and one Navy Crusader jet down with pilot missing. Heavy bombardment damaged English air field and caused casualties and material losses in Binh Dinh Province.

Morris holds free vehicle safety check next week

Morris police announce a voluntary safety check next Monday and Tuesday on Illinois Avenue between Liberty and Franklin Streets. Lanes run 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. with qualified volunteers performing visual checks and issuing windshield stickers.

Unsettled Weather Tonight Through Thursday with Showers

The U S Weather Bureau forecasts showers or thunder showers tonight with a low in the 60s. Wednesday brings variable clouds and a high near 80 with a chance of showers. Thursday looks warm and humid with more thunder shower chances. Collins Weather Station shows a Monday high of 84 and 65 low, 9 am reading 66 at the station and 11 15 am reading 73 downtown Morris, with trace precipitation recorded.

Graduation at Morris Community High School Ends 93rd Commencement

A crowd of over 1,500 filled the Morris Community High School gym as 180 seniors received diplomas during the 93rd commencement. Kay Lindsay, valedictorian, spoke of new horizons and responsibility, while Dr. Ben Hubbard delivered the address.

Rusk accuses Cairo of malicious lie over U S air activity report

Secretary of State Dean Rusk charged Cairo with lying in its report about U S air activity on the Israeli side of the Mideast war. He called the document invented for an unclear purpose and suggested Arab actions aimed at pressuring Americans.

Private Session on U.N. Deadlock

Astronaut Edward Givens Dies in Houston Area Crash

Houston area crash kills Edward Givens Jr., 37, Air Force major and father of three, shortly after midnight near Pearland. He was dead on arrival at a Houston hospital. This marks the seventh astronaut death in under three years. Police say his 1964 foreign compact left the road on a sharp turn and struck a ditch.

Egypt Syria and Algeria Cut Ties With United States

Cairo radio said Egypt broke relations with the United States accusing Washington and London of aiding the enemy. Damascus radio reported Syria severed ties with the United States and Britain. Algeria announced a break with the United States via Radio Algiers. Britain also had severed relations with Egypt.
