State Superintendent Michael Bakalis announced more than 2 million dollars in bilingual education funds from his office appropriations bill. Chicago will receive 1.4 million while downstate communities share 970 thousand.
Allen J. Ellender longtime Louisiana political figure and Senate president pro tempore died at Bethesda Naval Hospital at 7:20 p.m. Thursday from a heart attack. He had interrupted his Louisiana campaign for a seventh term to attend a Senate vote on an agriculture appropriations bill. Flags at half-staff reflected the loss of a longtime Senate agriculture voice.
The Chinese Embassy in Algiers confirmed Lin Piao died in a 1971 plane crash while fleeing to the Soviet Union after an alleged coup plot against Mao. The statement described Lin Piao’s repeated errors, anti party activity, and failed bid to usurp leadership. It also noted Mao’s efforts to rehabilitate him before the plan failed.
Chicago Judge Covelli schedules Monday hearing on a motion by Mayor Daley’s ousted delegation to bar 59 insurgent Illinois Democrats from participating in the August 5 caucus selecting state delegates to the Democratic National Convention. The challengers had seized the seats and prevailed at the convention, despite Covelli’s earlier ruling. Grundy County 4-H members wrapped up the 1972 Show at the Grundy County Fairgrounds near Morris with best of show trophies and final contests. More than 600 teens from 32 clubs participated as Jack Williams won the female grand champion sheep title and Pam Bounds took the reserve. grand champion ram lamb went to Mike Wills and reserve to Bounds.
Michael J. Howlett state auditor of public accounts and Democratic candidate for secretary of state will headline a Grundy County Democratic Central Committee fundraising dinner at the Morris VFW hall on Friday Aug 4. More than 200 people are expected with a social hour at 6 pm dinner at 7 pm and Howlett's speech around 8 15 pm. Tickets are available from local committee members.
Walter Krusich of Goose Lake Village and Elmhurst based American Business Men's Research Foundation will attend the first international conference on alcoholism and drug abuse in Kabul Afghanistan August 25 to 29. He will seat on a panel and speak at civic clubs and Kabul University while seeking statistics and papers for the foundation's Report on Alcohol. Krusich departs August 10 and returns September 7.
