Grundy County 4 H Fair Opens Amid Rainy Morning

Dairy cattle judging continued at the eighth Grundy County 4 H fair in Mazon as gates opened at 8 a m. By noon results across poultry baking and cooking divisions were reported, highlighting blue ribbon winners and team champions from Coal City Nettle Creek Gooselake and surrounding groups.

Plan Arraignment For Speck Monday

Chicago AP Richard Speck 24 indicted in the eight-nurse slayings faces arraignment Monday as the grand jury returned eight murder indictments. Judge Edward F Healy will set the arraignment date and Speck recovers from a chest ailment while awaiting transfer questions loom.

Driver Injured In One Car Accident Here

Guy Ferry 54 of Moline lost control on wet pavement at 6 40 a m on Interstate 80 half a mile west of Illinois 47. His car went into the ditch causing front end damage. He and wife Helen 50 were taken to Morris Hospital by Finland Ambulance. Mrs Ferry released after examination. Guy treated for a deep laceration over his right eyebrow and released. The Ferrys are at the Park Motel pending arrangements.

Timely Rain Saves Crops in County

Rain ended a long dry spell across northern Illinois with totals up to 3.40 inches in Chicago area and 17.08 inches since March in parts of Grundy County. Agronomists credit nitrogen fertilizer for corn tolerance. farmers face variable stands and a crucial pollination period after August first.

Lisle Crash Kills Three Mothers Daughter and Passenger

A mother Mrs Carol Pienney of Naperville a daughter Joanne and Linda Passmore 18 of Naperville were killed in a collision at Illinois 34 and Yender Avenue Lisle DuPage County. Police reported the three victims killed in the accident today.

4-H Clothing Projects Judged At County Fair

A total of 69 4-H girls earned A ratings on advanced clothing projects judged Tuesday at the fair grounds pavilion. The daylong event ran from 9 30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with examinations of garment construction and fit. Winners include Nancy Davy Mary Dearth Alice Wakeman Debbie Trotter and many others as county delegates to the state fair. first year projects also list multiple recipients across several clubs.

Bishop R Blanchette Named to Joliet Diocese Post

Most Rev. Romeo R. Blanchette named bishop of the Joliet Diocese by Pope Paul VI, replacing the late Bishop Martin C. Mc Namara. Blanchette, 53, long served as vicar general and chancellor, with installation to follow at Cathedral of Saint Raymond Nonnatus. He was born January 6, 1913 in St. George, Kankakee County, and has held numerous diocesan roles since 1949.

Wisconsin Supreme Court Reverses Antitrust Conviction in Braves Case

The Wisconsin Supreme Court, in a 4-3 ruling, overturned a Milwaukee antitrust conviction against baseball, saying the state cannot regulate the sport. The decision voided a judge’s finding against the National League and ordered dismissal of the state suit. The court cited federal precedent on baseball and warned against a patchwork of state controls. The state plans to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court within 30 days.

The U S Weather Bureau expects cloudy with a chance of showers tonight and a low in the lower 70s. Thursday outlook shows morning showers and partial clearing with a high in the lower 80s and variable winds. Tuesday reached 93 degrees at Collins Weather Station with a 70 degree low and 1.33 inches of rain late Tuesday into Wednesday morning.
