Severe weather lashed Illinois and five Midwestern states with thunderstorms and tornado funnels. In Vandalia Illinois, power lines fell and small fires started while a 14 year old boy died from lightning near Yorkville.
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey told governors that the United States must stay and fight in Viet Nam until North Vietnamese aggression ends. He argued withdrawal would risk Asia and declared the objective is to halt aggression and secure independence for South Vietnam. Governors weighed Johnson's Southeast Asia policy as mixed reactions surfaced.
Kendall County Sheriff reports strong Tuesday afternoon winds damaged Gaylord Murdaugh’s home one mile north of Lisbon on U S 52. Chimney blown down roof partially blown off and several windows broken. No injuries. No damage estimate available.
Charles E. Limbach died at 6 30 a.m. Monday from injuries from a Saturday automobile accident. He lived in Braidwood with Braceville as his mailing address.
The region ends an eight day run above 90 degrees in June and a streak of four of five 90s in July as cooler air arrives tonight with a upper 50s low. The Weather Bureau calls for fair skies and lower humidity. Thursday should be sunny with a mid 80s high and 10 to 15 mph winds. A 14 year old Yorkville boy, Thomas Leifheit, was struck by lightning and killed as he rode home from swimming at the Polish National Alliance Camp. A companion was uninjured. Survivors include his parents two brothers John and Tim Lee and sister Katherine Ann. Funeral services are planned at Cross Lutheran Church with visitation today at Larson-Gabel Funeral Home.
The Grundy County Board of School Trustees approved annexing 54 acres and 2025 feet of railroad right of way in Hatcher's Woods to Morris Elementary District 54, detaching it from Nettle Creek District 24C. The move, 5-1 with Ray Cryder opposing, includes plans to subdivide into 50 lots with homes valued around 25 000 dollars each, and the indebtedness would be borne by Morris without taxing increases.
Jens Spandet of Morris was re elected chairman of the Grundy County Board of School Trustees at an organizational meeting in the county superintendent s office. He has served as chairman since 1962 and a trustee since July 1960. Kenneth Wilkinson was re elected as vice chairman. B J Ulm of Coal City was elected June 14 for a six year term to fill a vacancy. The meeting preceded hearings on two annexation petitions involving 54.4 acres in Hatcher s Woods and 2025 feet of railroad right of way property.
About 197000 Volkswagen cars were ordered recalled for inspection of front axle ball joint assemblies and rear luggage compartment lids. Volkswagen of America said 175000 Beetles and Karmann-Ghia models are affected, with about 22000 station wagons also included in the recall.

The village hosts its 14th annual Homecoming from July 13 to July 17 with a parade on Sunday. Proceeds fund a new well. The event features a carnival, sports, speeches, sky divers, helicopter rides, and a long list of local organizers and honored guests led by Mayor Robert King.
In Decatur Illinois AP reports a fourth person has died from injuries from the Monday crash near Mount Pulaski. Victims include Mary Holt age 12 of Butler Indiana and English E Blade 47 of Metamora, his daughter Jane 13, and Jeffrey Gray 4 of Decatur.
US pilots dodged a large Soviet missile attack in North Viet Nam's Red River Valley. Officials later cautioned on duplicate sightings, with 27 to 29 missiles fired and four sites destroyed plus two fuel depots hit within 33 miles of Hanoi.
Coast Guard Civil Air Patrol and ground crews searched for three Illinois women missing after being seen boarding a boat with three unknown men at Indiana Dunes State Park. Authorities checked a boat sighting near Ludington and mobilized helicopters planes and a sheriff's posse including Battery B 1st Missile Battalion 60th Artillery.
Morris pool attendance in Gould Park rose over last year by 655 with 12 638 gate checks in June compared to 11 983 in June 1965. The week ending Sunday posted 6 594 as the high seven day total. Record days were Thursday 1 257 and Sunday 905 with 372 swimmers on the Fourth of July.
