Drowns While Aiding Fire In Mazon River
James E. Roberts a 24 year old Mokena man drowned in the Mazon River at 845 p m while wading to aid his brothers whose 30 foot Criss Craft boat caught fire in a mud slough near Stratton Park. The boat burned to the water line. Roberts who could not swim stepped into a hole in the river bottom and drowned. his body was recovered by the Morris Emergency Squad and taken to Kiersch Funeral Home. An inquest will be held.

Eight Injured in Grundy County Weekend Accidents
Four auto crashes in Grundy County over the weekend injured eight people. Six motorcycle mishaps left six hurt, one seriously. Ronald Hempel, 24, is in fair condition with head injuries after a late Sunday skid on I 80 I 47 exit ramp. Eugene L. Stokes, 27, escaped injury after a two car crash on I 80. he was ticketed for driving too fast for conditions. Ronald Svibergel and others received treatment and release. Multiple other riders and drivers were treated for abrasions and lacerations at Morris Hospital.
