After nearly 72 hours of sub-zero weather Grundy County rose above zero Sunday afternoon as Collins Weather Station reported seven above. The deep freeze caused power outages, frozen pipes, and widespread travel disruptions from Delaware to Virginia with dozens of deaths linked to the storm.
A 55 year old Elgin State Hospital escapee was captured at 2 05 a m near the Illinois River bridge in Morris after an earlier crash on I 55 south of Gardner Grundy County. The suspect Fred L Damon drove a stolen 1963 Buick at 90 mph and failed to stop for a high speed pursuit following a collision that injured two Chicago residents. Authorities from Dwight Morris and Grundy County coordinated the arrest after Damon fled on I 55 and Illinois 47. The victims William Lowe and Boyzie Sears were treated and released. Damon was jailed then handed back to Elgin hospital authorities. The car belonged to James H Boleyack of Elgin hospital staff.

Genevieve Boyer of 830 Fremont Ave. began working as a full time clerk in the Grundy County circuit clerk's office this morning. She fills the vacancy from the resignation of Mrs. Robert Olson. Mrs. Williamson, wife of the circuit clerk, assists part time during the interim.
In Stevens Point Wisconsin the National Safety Council paused its annual skid and tire traction tests on ice as Sunday temperatures from zero to minus 19 hindered preparing nine acres of smooth ice and risked delaying the tests.
Seek Channel 55 in Milwaukee. Field Communications Corp said Sunday it plans to file with the Federal Communications Commission to obtain the television channel for the city.
Four fires in the Morris area over the weekend caused thousands of dollars in damage and left two people homeless. Leo Steffes, Aux Sable Township, was hospitalized for shock after a fire destroyed a large garage housing tractors and a Buick. Keith Steffes, 18, was treated for a cut above the eye from a falling eaves trough. Bruce and Mrs. Farris, caretakers at the Grundy County Red and Gun Club, lost their trailer and moved into the club house. The Morris and Minooka fire departments fought blazes amid subzero temperatures, with one fire discovered at 2:45 a.m. Sunday and others reported Saturday afternoon and evening.
Happy Chandler King and Edward Earl Williams waived indictments after arrest in Cairo for a December Ridgecrest subdivision break-in. They face burglary and theft charges with $10,000 bonds. theft counts continued generally. Arraignment on burglary is set for next Monday. attorney said talks occurred last week.
The U S Weather Bureau predicts a brief warm spell followed by possible snow. Lows near 15 degrees tonight with Tuesday highs in the 20s. After a Saturday low of five below, temperatures rebounded to 16 below. Sunday at Collins Weather Station showed a high near zero and a low around zero, warming to six above by 9 am.
President Johnson renewed a Vietnamese peace bid to the United Nations after resuming bombing in North Vietnam. He directed Ambassador Goldberg to seek an immediate UN Security Council meeting and present a report and resolution to open talks, tying peace to renewed diplomacy and American resolve.
