No Break Seen In Cold Wave

Unrelenting cold gripped Illinois Friday night with near record lows across the state. Temperatures ranged from -16 in extreme northern Illinois to near 10 above in the far south as a Southwest storm drove heavy snow and icy conditions toward the Mississippi Valley.

Deferments to be based on tests and class standing

The Selective Service will resume using a testing system and class standing to guide local draft boards in granting college student deferments. The program, effective next college year, will affect high school seniors and college students as negotiations with testing agencies proceed and the student status certificate is revised to reflect class standing.

Eastern Illinois Junior College District Approved by Board

Illinois Junior College Board approved organizing a 12 county Class I district in eastern Illinois with an March 12 election date to decide on district formation. If approved, a board of education will be elected and site plans set.

Boston Fire Devastates Downtown Hotels Fatal Blast

A massive explosion and fire in downtown Boston killed at least 13 people and injured more than 52 as firemen and police searched wreckage for additional victims. District Fire Chief William Terrenzi said twelve bodies had been recovered and the blast lifted the cocktail lounge floor into a basement chamber. Several bodies were severely charred and hospital officials reported three patients on the danger list.

German Plane Crash Kills 4h Passengers

A Lufthansa Convair on a Frankfurt to Hamburg route via Bremen plunged into a meadow near Bremen Airport in dense fog, exploding after missing the runway. Forty two passengers and four crew died, including seven Italian swimmers and their entourage. The crash, the airline's worst, sparked a large investigation and far reaching damage to nearby areas.

Mrs. Frances Rothrock aged 50 of West Salem Illinois was killed Thursday afternoon when the tractor she was driving overturned near Mount Erie Illinois authorities reported.

Death of Transit Workers Union Leader Michael Quill

Michael J. Quill, 60, head of the AFL-CIO Transport Workers Union, died at his home after collapsing January 4 following an arrest for anti strike actions. He led New York City transit workers through a 12 day subway and bus strike ending January 13 and later criticized President Johnson over wage guidelines.

Georgia farmer awarded damages over coon dog death

Willard York of Santee received 300 dollars from a Georgia legislative committee after a State Game and Fish Department biologist killed his four year old coon hunting dog on a state game reserve. York had sought 1200 dollars and the biologist was fined 200 dollars.

Weather Outlook and Cold Snap Updates

The forecast suggests little change in today’s weather with highs from zero to five above. Friday’s downtown high was three degrees below zero and Collins Weather Station readings dropped from five below at 6 p m to eight below by 9 p m. Sunday is expected partly cloudy and very cold.

Johnson says 1964 resolution guides decision on bombing

President Johnson states he will be guided by the 1964 congressional resolution authorizing use of armed force in defense of South Vietnam. He argues peace is blocked by fanatical leaders and warns against the rule of ruin as debates continue on resuming bombing of North Vietnam.
