Partly cloudy and windy with colder air and a chance of evening snow flurries. Saturday will be mostly sunny and much colder with highs near 5 to 10. Gardner hosts 13 foreign students from the University of Illinois at Champaign this weekend. Sponsored by the Gardner-South Wilmington High School FHA chapter, they visited classes, dined with the Gardner Lions Club, and will attend tonight’s Coal City vs Gardner basketball game. They stay in local homes and depart Sunday afternoon.

Morris Public School Chief Kenneth S. Hammer Dies
Kenneth S. Hammer 55 longtime Morris Public Grade School District superintendent died at Presbyterian St Luke's Hospital Chicago after 21 years in the post. He served as Illinois Education Association president and attended world teaching conferences. Hammer, a Morrison native, held degrees from Cornell College and University of Colorado with further study at Illinois. He taught in Iowa Colorado Michigan and served in the U S Army 1942 to 1945. He led IEA finance and served on retirement home board Shamel Manor and NEA delegations.

Lockport Teachers Accept Contract Ending Walkout
Lockport Illinois teachers voted 144 to 21 to accept a new contract retroactive to September 1 and return to work, ending a strike that began January 18. The two year agreement includes a one year wage clause raising starting pay from 7200 to 7850 with fringe benefits and hospital education incentives, and will not extend the semester.

Early morning burglary at Milton Pope School near Seneca damages doors and windows. About $10 in change taken from the kitchen and additional unspecified amounts from four classrooms. Morris Community High School Concert Band Comes Alive
The Morris Community High School presents Sound Organized in Time and Space a concert Friday February 5 at 8 p.m. in the MCHS auditorium.
