Grundy planning panel votes on school site ordinance send to attorney

The Grundy County Regional Planning Commission met Wednesday at the courthouse electing Edwin Burnham as chair, Perry Brooks as vice-chair, and Mrs. John Hendrickson as secretary. It voted to accept in principle the school administrators' proposed ordinance on land donation for school sites and will forward the wording to the state attorney for review. The commission will also hear Ronald Kaiser about rezoning 4.43 acres in Wauponsee Township from A to B-2 at its next session.

Sandwich man held for grand jury in Pine Village steak house killings

Circuit Judge Robert Sears ordered Carl Allan Reimann 31 of Sandwich bound over to a Kendall County grand jury after a 90 minute preliminary hearing in Yorkville on five counts of murder one count of armed robbery and one theft tied to the Dec 29 Pine Village Steak House slayings Also held was Mrs Betty F Prine BD of Somonauk for identical charges A witness John Cantrell testified he could not positively identify the male suspect The case involves multiple deaths at the restaurant with one bartender dying days later A deputy coroner and a Morris officer described the scene and arrests The two defendants are jailed without bond and a witness list was restricted during the hearing.

Willey to speak at Grundy Chamber dinner February 3 1972

Rev Charles H Willey of Moline will headline the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce annual dinner with the theme You Cant Do Business With an Empty Wagon. The event starts 6 30 p.m. at the Morris Holiday Inn with arrangements by the chamber special events committee chaired by Joe Schmitz. Willey, a long time minister and acclaimed speaker, serves on multiple boards and has addressed hundreds of groups across the United States and Canada attracting wide audiences. Warn parents on school absences in Cairo Illinois

Cairo officials led by Gene Mason warn parents of chronically absent children as potential criminal proceedings loom. Meeting with Cairo School principals, Circuit Judge Dorothy Spomer and others followed a day when 120 high school students missed Jan 19 classes, with chronic absenteeism threatening state and federal aid. penalties include up to 30 days in jail and fines up to $500.

Final salute to President Johnson

The Johnson funeral procession moved from Congress under bright sunshine as Lyndon B. Johnson’s coffin was taken to the National City Christian Church. Lady Bird Johnson, the daughters, and the children paid respects while thousands watched from the Capitol grounds. President Nixon and leaders planned to attend, with the jet transport later returning the body to Texas for burial. The Capitol Rotunda held the long overnight vigil as citizens paid quiet, personal tributes.

Tentative pact with Chicago teachers ends strike

A tentative agreement on Chicago teachers strike terms was announced after an all night session. The board offers 22.6 million dollars, including 15 million from not paying teachers during the strike and 5 million from anticipated salvage in the 1972 budget. CTU president Healey said gains were made but not all demands met. Approval by the full board and ratification by teachers still required. The board also offered a 2 percent raise and class size reductions in all elementary schools.

Weather Outlook With Mild Warmer Temps Ahead

Mostly sunny and warmer today with a high near 50. Tonight will be partly cloudy and warmer, low in the upper 30s. Friday looks cloudy and mild with a chance of rain, high in the lower 50s. Wednesday's high reached 39 at Dresden Island Locks and Dam, with a low of 23. At 7 am today, 26 degrees. at 9:30 am in downtown Morris, 43 degrees.

Ex-chairman testifies on racing dates

CHICAGO The Illinois Racing Board chair in 1967 testified he would not have voted to award racing dates to Balmoral Jockey Club if he had known Otto Kerner owned 5000 Balmoral shares. Francis E. Crosby said Kerner appointed him chair in May 1967. Crosby's testimony was admitted as Kerner and Theodore Isaacs face conspiracy fraud bribery and tax charges.

Community backs Morris Hospital with 1972 gifts

In 1972 Morris Hospital received more than 12 000 in donations plus 3 000 toward building fund pledges. Major supporters were First National Bank of Morris and Grundy County National, combining over 5 000 in gifts or services. Other 1 000 plus gifts came from Carl Anderson and Willard Matteson, with many individuals giving up to 100 and over 350 memorial gifts totaling 3 180.45.
