Grundy County Regional Planning Commission recommended two zoning changes at the courthouse meeting. Frank Weber seeks to rezone 2.95 acres on Dwight Rd and the Illinois River from agriculture to manufacturing to align zoning with current use for docking and barge operations under contract with First National Bank of Morris.
Very hazardous travel today with partly sunny skies, colder temperatures, and very windy conditions. Blowing and drifting snow will drive temperatures down slowly. Tonight will be fair but very cold with lows from 5 to 15 degrees below zero. Thursday brings mostly sunny skies and a milder calm.
The third heavy snowstorm of the year paralyzed Morris and nearby areas with 7 inch accumulations and drifting. High winds closed roads in Grundy and Kendall counties and Interstate 80. Power outages, stalled vehicles, and multiple crashes were reported as authorities urged towing for disabled vehicles and plowing of emergency routes.
Local and county officials from Joliet and Grundy County will attend a Monday briefing at the Joliet Administration Building on federal aid for snow removal. FDAA and Illinois officials will outline reimbursements procedures, required documents, and eligibility. Reimbursements cover two thirds of eligible costs for a limited period after the Jan blizzard.
Minooka Village Board tabled a request by Minooka High School to raise the land donation value from 10 000 to 15 000 for 1979 under the Developers School Site Donation Ordinance. The action would boost the average 3 bedroom home tax impact from 106 to 164 in the Minooka district. The item will be reviewed at the next regular meeting on February 12. The board urged residents to conserve water as the village pump is down for repairs. Schools agreed to curb physical education showers. Gerald Flatness and James Kleiber were reappointed to the planning commission for three year terms. The board authorized the Race of Dimes in the village Saturday January 27 from 830 a.m. to 1 p.m. A Home Savings and Loan bond release request of 31 000 was tabled. Investigations continue into applying for federal snow removal funds. Police Chief Lloyd Unland will explore federal grant options for traffic, school drug programs or crime prevention.
Washington reports consumer prices rose 9 percent in 1978, the largest yearly increase in four years, driven by higher meat and milk costs. December still showed a 0.6 percent advance as medical costs and California tax cuts tempered gains, while food prices climbed 0.8 percent for the month. The Morris Planning Commission meeting was cancelled due to weather with no rescheduled date yet set.
John Corneglio Jr. 23 of South Wilmington was arrested in Braceville and charged in Grundy County Circuit Court with robbing three Dwight men on Third Street in Carbon Hill early Saturday. Investigators say two wallets, a watch and cash were stolen and some items dumped along Grinter Road. Bail set at 30000. three accomplices to be questioned.
Seventeen people were injured when a Tri-State Coach Lines bus rear ended a sand spreader truck near O'Hare International Airport and was hit by a limousine. Hospital reports list several in fair or serious condition, including Rich Clark with a fractured leg and head injuries and Col. Franklin Ross with head injuries. No charges were filed immediately.
A Rock Island Railroad freight train was halted in Morris for about 90 minutes from 4 to 5:30 am today. Police said all grade crossings were blocked as the train stalled due to an air pressure leak, preventing movement until repairs and air restoration are completed.
Nominating petitions for the April 14 Minooka Village Board election are available from village clerk Mrs. David Corbin. Three 3 year terms will be filled as James Bretsch Jr. James Mullen and Norman Miller term expirations loom. Only Mullen has indicated lack of reelection. No petitions filed yet though two petitions have been taken out. Filing ends February 13.
